  1. errrrmm tricky one - I'm no solicitor, but i don't think its so simple :(

Most goods are sold on an 'invitation to treat' basis, that is to say, if you see a product in a window, then your 'offer' to buy or form contract, is based upon the vendor 'accepting' your offer, and due 'consideration' (usually money :D ) being given by both parties. These are 3 fundamental rules of contract, so technically they can argue that there was only an 'invitation to treat' expressed at the time of paying, and no formal contract to buy. Furthermore, they can argue 'consideration' was refuted on their part.

Regarding the trading standards, I believe the actual product has to be marked. E.g reduced value beer with '4 for £5' embossed on the can, cannot be legally sold for more. In the actual product was not marked.

All that said, just kick up a massive stink - usually works for me

  2. Henny said it all really :D 1.8 16v engine is a real craker!! I'm on my second now for the same insurance reasons you are.

If selling, I'd be looking to clear mine for £2k ish, which i bought two years ago for £2,9 and 77k on the clock, so £3k is OTT unless it's a real real cracker!!

Don't pay too much attention to a rattly engine on starting either, the hydraulic tappets wear, but the noise dissapears when warm - if it carries on then worry!! Also try and start any car you see from cold, otherwise you'll feel real peeved when it has trouble turning on the cold morning after you bought it :x

Besides that usual stuff:- cambelt change, slipping clutch, swerve on braking etc etc

    good luck

  3. What sort of C you got? Did my 16v myself again earlier this year, nothing as drastic as dropping the rear axle though!

I changed the mid and rear box, took me about 4hours as the clasps had ceased due to the heat - ended up angle grinding the bloody things off!

Once removed the box is relatively easy to get back on (it hooks over the rear bar) - you'll need a friends ramp though, i've done it off concrete blocks once and it took me three days :(

Best bet is just get underneath the car and have a good look round, as it's dead easy to suss where joints are. Don't forget some spare hanging rubbers and the exhaust sealant.

If you don't like getting dirty, and crap in your eyes - you won't like this job though!!

    Good luck!

  4. "well IIRC the fuel pump is before the filter so the pump will have any dregs going through it into the filter also the fuel filter ideally should be changed every 20k miles AFAIK to keep the fuel system in tip-top condition.......the key here is preventative maintanence"

Havn't had the fuel filter changed my 16v for 30k, not because I don't want to - but every garage I go to says they risk fracturing the fuel line (fuel line/ filter connections rusted and fused together) Without replacing the whole fuel line anyone got any experience/ suggestions. :?:

Incidentally i get town - 17mpg, if steady 60mph ish then low 30'smpg, and motorway 28mpg. Only mods to air box and K&N. Might get a bit less mpg with a new filter

  5. Nice one fella - did exactly the same to my 16v last weekend :D

Drilled about 22 nr 12mm holes down outside edge, removed the standard inlet pipe, cleaned my K&N, removed the plastic shield behind my light and then stuck a high temp resistant pipe as a cold air feed - total cost £15.75

Result - bit pokier, but yeh the sound is good - plant your foot at lowish revs in 3rd gear and it pulses big time - nice!!!

Changed both front lights last year too (forced to by a bridge) Lights are tonnes better, apparently a really thin layer of the silver reflective stuff peels and falls to the bottom of light with age. Lights are tonnes better now - would recommend it.

  6. "Thanks great help...... what about the 1.8 16v"

Welcome mate - still a newbie myself!

I've had two 16v's now, reason being I always was a bit wary of the g60 superchargeer rebuild cost, but nowadays seems there's a few guys who can rebuild a lot cheaper. Hence might make my next a G60 :D

In terms of the 16v, i've found both mine to be 'fairly reliable'!! Ok I've had some reasonable bills every year for one thing and another, but well worth it, and you can mostly see  (hear) the trouble coming!

'Majorish' trouble i've had is 'rear callipers, rear shocks (wallowing), rear and mid exhaust, hydraulic tappets' rest has been the usual suspects like damn door handles :x

    Best of luck anyway!

  7. Eh - does no one on this forum live/ work in the south west??!!

Keep looking for 'yocals' but neerrr seen any..? Anyways here goes, the ones I know: -
