WillCful started following Oil, some basic advice., Ditto (Also Thinking of Buying Corrado...), Lewvw's Blackberry VR6 for sale again and and 2 others

Ah right, well I suppose I had a 50/50 chance of getting it right...

Let me get this straight... So the lower the w number (5w, 10w, etc.) the thicker the oil is at low temperatures. So a a 5w would be thicker than a 10w at low temps. And the higher the second number (30, 40, etc.) the thicker (more viscous) the oil is a higher temps? As far as I know thick oil is worse for engine lubrication because it doesn't flow as well, so a higher w number is good because it will start better cold because the oil will be thinner and the second number depends on how hot your engine runs so that the oil is at the right viscosity (thin enough) at operating temperature. 10w being good for what, up to say 120deg? Right... ?

Good call on the anti-rust stuff. Oh and I think white spirit is good at cutting through old underseal but I've never tried it and would be very careful around the paintwork with it... Yes! Prometheus looks awesome!
-
Just put it up for a completely unfeasible asking price and then when it doesn't sell you can keep it! At least you tried... And I agree with Redfox, it could be worse, you could be a fisherman...

Underseal is pretty easy to do yourself, I bought a big tub of the stuff from halfords. I have no idea whether or not its competitively priced from there, I wasn't that fussed but you can probs get it cheaper on-line somewhere. Just give it a clean and then a sand and then a clean again (easier if you've got a jet wash and an apc thats good at cutting through grease) to make sure there's no corrosion or dirt left and then whack on the underseal! Go nuts you can never have too much but obviously don't paint it on anything that moves or gets hot :-) Good contrast in those pics by the way, maybe just a warming filter to really bring out the blackberry! Will.

Cool, thanks for the info! I intend to learn to weld on my rado project, but we'll see how that goes! Sounds good, I like to think I'm fairly competent at picking up new stuff so perhaps I'll give it a shot. The only bad things I've heard about DTA is the availability of mappers (i.e you have to travel far to find someone to map it) which could be expensive if you need to trailor, but if you do it DIY then that gets rid of the issue. Still doing some research on other ECUs...

Sweet! Thanks guys, better get shopping!

This is pretty incredible, congrats! I would love to do a rado r32 conversion, I'd be ok with the mechanical stuff but the re-mapping etc scares me! I think using a DTA or other aftermarket ECU as you have done is the way forward, cos you can iron out all the 'problems' with the engine such as flat spots etc. What software and diagnostics have you used to do the map? Well done again!!

I've never driven a VR6 so can't really compare but my mate has just bought a TT 3.2 quattro and it's pretty sweet... Just needs a turbo now ;-)

Hi, thanks for the reply! So the VR6 shell is different from the others? I figured that all shells would be the same... I've never owned a rado so I don't know much about them, thanks for the advice I will put a post in the engine section! Yeah a high mileage car would be the best bet. I intend to strip the whole thing down and pretty much do as close to a full restore as I can, I also intend to learn to weld on this project so rust (within reason) might not be such a huge issue either (but we'll see how that goes!). ---------- Post added at 9:08 PM ---------- Previous post was at 9:05 PM ---------- Oh also I live in Congleton near the war memorial hospital and there is a grey rado down the road from me! I can't remember the reg but it had a the-corrado.net sticker in the window. Shout out if it's yours ;-) !

Hi all! I've owned a few golfs over last few years, currently on a mk4 2.0 8v, which I love despite the slowness ;-). I've always liked Corrados and fancy getting my teeth into a proper project (currently have space for two cars so the golf can stay as daily). Basically if I buy one the objective is an engine swap probably to a an r32 or maybe something else. If anyone has any suggestions for other engine options please let me know! I'm tempted to go for a vr6 but if I'm just going to swap then perhaps it would be better to save a few pennies and go for one of the 2.0 engines? Or perhaps I would be able to recoup my losses by selling said vr6 lump, any help and suggestions much appreciated! Cheers, Will.
