deag 0 Posted October 25, 2004 Hey, on a recent oil-change, I put about 4.5 to 4.75 into my 1.8 16v engine. It's now reading well over the max, just wondering how much the engine would normally hold? I thought about 4 litres, and was surprised to see it so far over the max. Is it worth draining the excess? deag.
theRuler 0 Posted October 25, 2004 yes. drain the excess and get the oil level right ASAP dont cane it with too much oil in. it can pop oil seals - not good if you find that your engine, from empty doesnt hold as much as it should, then it could be sludged up. then its "flushing oil" time. deag 0 Posted October 25, 2004 cheers mate, :) looks like I've a job lined up for this evening then! As for flushing, what's involved? a flushing agent? deag.
theRuler 0 Posted October 25, 2004 you can buy a flushing agent that you toss in with the oil run it for a while (not sure how long, but not very) then drain it all. hopefully the sludgy stuff with come out too.
dazzyvr6 0 Posted October 25, 2004 quite a lot of people say stay away from flushing agents as they can do more harm than good
theRuler 0 Posted October 25, 2004 yeh back in the old days, you could buy super thin oil, and you used to run the engine for like 20 MILES on it. not good. wynns make one that you just put in with the normal oil, run it hot, then drain it out. better than having sludge (which means less oil!!!!) Guest Posted October 25, 2004 wynns make one that you just put in with the normal oil, run it hot, then drain it out. :? I've used the wynns, and it really does what it says on the tin. My oil was clean for ages rather than doing a change, running car and it be dirty again lol. Only thing was when i used it on my old car (golf) white smoke cam out the exhaust, same on my pals raddo...
emax 0 Posted August 28, 2005 I've just managed to over-fill my VR by about 1 litre. It's going into Star Performance tomorrow to sort out a coolant leak anyway (about 15 miles). Will it damage the engine/cat if I drive it this distance and let them drain the excess (I don't have the tools to hand you see)?
Supercharged 2 Posted August 29, 2005 1 ltr should really do any harm but I wouldn't let it get to hot... best if you can to drain half a litre out of the filter housing, just need an allen key...
emax 0 Posted August 29, 2005 Thanks. I spoke to Star before driving it in this morning. They said it should be ok as long as I drive it gently.
