VR6 Gearbox oil change

I think i ought to do this.

 

I have not changed it before! my questions are -

 

which grade oil?

how much will i need?

is there some sort of funky tool required to remove the plugs?

is overfilling (by a controlled amount) a good thing?

1 - Redline MT-90 (75/90W)

2 - 2 bottles

3 - 17mm allen key

4 - impossible to overfill as it pours out of the filler hole when full.

overfilling can be done through the speedo cable hole (on older golfs anyway)

i heard it recommended once.

Try removing the speed sensor on the VR box though, not fun :lol:

 

You can overfill but I wouldn't as it will over pressurise the seals.

You can mis-judge the correct level if the car is jacked up or on a slope - it's best to do it on a hoist, keeping the car level.

......and another thing !

 

A very good tip, (found somewhere in here - acknowledgements to the originator), is to make sure you can undo the filler plug before you drain all the oil out.
