Valver 0 Posted November 23, 2004 Can anyone tell me if all the VR6 alternators are the same but with different voltage regulators? ie. if I have a 70A or 90A alternator can I just swap the regulator for a 120A or 150A one?..... or are the internals totally different?... Cheers in advance.
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted November 23, 2004 Check with the dealer but I'm pretty sure they all have the same bodies, just different windings..... there's also Bosch and Valeo ones.... make sure the looms are the same. Why do you need a 150A alternator???
dr_mat 0 Posted November 23, 2004 The internals of the regulators or the internals of the alternator? Surely the alternator itself will physically be larger for the 120 or 150A models than the puny 70A, it's twice the current rating! Not sure about the regulator though. Kevin Bacon 5 Posted November 23, 2004 The 120A one bolts on OK as PhatVR6 had one on his, so......
gibber 0 Posted November 23, 2004 IIRC it has the same bolt pattern but it is physicaly bigger as in longer.
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted November 23, 2004 Probably need the passat brackets to go with it then....
Valver 0 Posted November 23, 2004 Hmmm, currently have an uprated 90A one on my 16v Golf - the one on the VR6 engine I'm transplanting has a 70A one as standard but I'd rather have the biggest one I can get due to ICE system (2 RF amps), Xenon HIDs, possibly SatNav/screen etc...
