MLPVR6 0 Posted January 17, 2005 Morning. I have an intermittent tapping sound coming from the engine of my '92 VR6. Seems to be coming from the front drivers side somewhere near the alternator. I replaced the worn water pump last week thinking this was the source of the noise as it was also leaking fluid. Noise continues though. However, it is not all the time. Seems to start after driving the car quite hard for a few minutes, and also goes away after a little while so not sure id it is anything to do with the temperature of the engine. On a gentle 25 minute drive to work rarely exceeding 2000 rpm it sounds fine. Sound is regular and in time with the engine. It gives the engine a mildly diesel-esque sound. Garage didn't notice anything when changing the pump, or when fitting a new exhaust and correcting a mis-fire a few weeks before. Anyone any ideas? Thanks
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted January 17, 2005 Worn tappets most likely.

gibber 0 Posted January 17, 2005 I would change your oil and filter for the correct items before I fear the worst!
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted January 17, 2005 Not bad but a lengthy process to change. The cams have to come out. "Tappets" referred to in this post are Hydraulic lifters. They are oil filled metal buckets under the cams that push the valves down. You're looking at around 3 to 4 hours labour plus parts at a competent garage.
