Republic Of Mancunia 0 Posted January 28, 2005 Hi all hope some one can help out with this problem or point me in the right direction. I've had a search through the forum but can't find anything that sounds like the problem I’m getting. When cruising in 4th or 5th gear and I accelerate hard the engine over revs, then drops off and then picks up as normal. My first thought was that my clutch could be slipping but I've tried all of the usual test and its seems ok. It also does it in 2nd and 3rd but it is more of a pause, revs increase pauses then carries on going up. Thanks
dr_mat 0 Posted January 28, 2005 Engine revs can't increase without accompanying increase in road speed unless the clutch slips or the wheels spin.. And I doubt you're spinning the wheels in 4th and 5th! :) Are you sure the engine revs increase or is it just the needle jumping?
Henny 0 Posted January 28, 2005 I'm with Dr_"I can't make up my mind what I want to be called today" Mat on this one... If the engine revs go up while you're in gear and you don't accelerate, your clutch is slipping. Time for a new clutch... :|
Republic Of Mancunia 0 Posted January 31, 2005 Thanks for the advice. I took it a local VW specialist at the weekend they said that it is the clutch and that I’ve just noticed it early. They advised me that I should get the timing chain changed at the same time because the gearbox would have to come out again if I were to have them replaced. The timing chains aren't making a noise but my VR has done about 95k, do you think I should get it done or are they just trying to rip me off?
corradovr6sc 0 Posted January 31, 2005 Yes they're right. I'd definitely get it done at that mileage.
dr_mat 0 Posted January 31, 2005 Depends how long you're keeping the car, IMHO. If you're planning on doing more than another 6 months it's probably worth it, cos the chains can just become noisy pretty quickly when they start to go.
