Serpentine belt tensioner replacement

I am sure there used to be a 'how-to' guide for changing this, sorry to be a retard but does anyone know where I can find it :oops:

I think there is a guide for just the bearing - the whole unit is £60 from VW

I can give you a guide now mate:-

 

1. Jack car up a bit on the offside.

2. Remove pulley splash guard (couple of 8mm self tappers)

3. Slacken the belt by screwing a long 8mm bolt (13mm head) into the threaded hole on top of the tensioner (next to injector number 2).

4. Remove belt from pulleys.

5. Fit new belt

6. Undo and remove 8mm bolt to retension.

7. Refit splash guard.

 

This would be a good time to check the tensioner springs too. Start the car up and observe the tensioner pulley. If it bobs up and down, the springs are shot and you need a new tensioner......I'm not trying to scare you, just offering a bit preventative maintanence advice.

 

I'm pretty sure that applies to air con engines too, you just have a longer and 'double serpentine' belt than engines without air con.

It's a lot easier if you take the air filter box and trunking off.

 

Yes, it's much the same for a/c belts.

 

Kev, he seems to want details of replacing the tensioner itself, so I think you need to go further with your teach-in. I assume it's just undoing a few more bolts.

Ah sorry, yeah must have mis-read the thread title!

 

Yeah you just undo the 3 bolts that secure it to the engine (after the tension has been released) and off it comes.

 

Or does he mean instructions on replacing the pulley bearing? That's definitely been covered on here!

It was actually the pulley bearing I was thinking of- I just can't seem to find the 'how-to' guide . Shouldn't it be in the 'knowledge base'?
