problems ..problems..problems...

Recommended Posts

hi, i gotta 2.0 8v and its been overheating...i think ive narrowed the problem down to the fan not turning on when it should...as in i think its coming on too late. would this be due to a sensor? i can see what looks like a plug with leads on it going into the bottom of the rad..is this the sensor i need? and how do i go about changing it???also any ideas on the price of a new sensor??...thanks guys. :) :? :o :( :D

Ok, sounds like the rad thermoswitch is faulty (fan probably one comes on at 110 degrees?) It should have 2 opperating ranges (2 stage fan)

They are about £7 for GSF and you'll need to find if you need the flat or the (later) round plug depending on the year of your car. They are located between to top and botom hoses on the rad, take the plug off to check the wiring and which type it is...

To change it you take the battery off and use a 30mm (plumbing size) spanner, if your quick to swap them over you shouldn't lose much coolant but mae sure you get the old washer off and the new one goes on, compression washer so just needs to be nipped up (don't overtighten)

Try the top and bottom hoses for heat. The 2 litre in my Passat runs exceptionally cold according to the gauge.

Try jumping the switch wiring to get the fan on. A pair of pointed pliers should do the job without burning yourself. Probably a fat red for the power in and jump that to the other 2 wires for the 2 speeds.

Hmmm - did you take it for a run to warm up fully??

I assumed the pump and thermostat were ok as you said the fan was coming on eventually so the Rad must be getting some heat into it...
