VWSH is it really worth it?

Recommended Posts

I've been reading some of the buyers guides Parkers, etc.. and as usual they insist that a full service history is highly reccomended for Corrados. This is hardly a revelation as these guides allways say that for performance cars.

My car is a 92 (or maybe a 93 from reading the guides :? ) and is the kind of car you would look for; 1 owner from new, FVWSH, 69 genuine miles and a stack of service bills, the last one was for £1200

The only downside is that the car is not mint on the outside or inside. It is not in bad condition, more just that the previous owner was never into cleaning it.. ever from the looks of it  The sunroof has a snapped guide which I will fix myself and I have cleaned the car to death and I would now call it in VGC :) I would not take much to bring it back to A1 condition but I live in London and I might do this if I ever sell it.

Anyway.. the car is on 69k and the next service is due at 71k but I just don't know if it's worth getting VW to do it. I am pretty handy with the spanner and can do the basic servicing eg, brakes, oil changes, etc. I would steer clear of electrics, suspension, or anything that need specialist tools though and would have my local garage that I trust do that work.

I have allways been a petrolhead and have had some tasty cars but seem to have always sold them on when the service was due. Or they have had their service history run out and been owner maintained. My buys have always been sound and I have never bought a lemon and I think judging the owner is as important as the car!

Anyway I am just trying to work out the economics and wondering if those little bits of paper and VW stamps really make the car more valuable. I would much rather have my local garage do any major work and do the minor stuff myself

Forget to mention I will NOT scrimp of service items. The car will get what it needs.. its just the part will not be fitted by a VW dealer!

I understand where you are coming from here mate - find myself wondering the same quite often!

As a car buyer, it certainly makes the car more appealing if it has service history, as to whether or not it needs to be VWSH is another thing! Personally, so long as i can see the car has been looked after, be it by the local garage down the road or the big company up the M6, i dont really care!! So long as its been looked after!! More often than not, the smaller specialist companys will care for someones pride and joy more carefully than the big money spinning dealerships, cos that is there business, as oppose to dealers who are really just trying to make a profit at all costs!

so, personally i dont think that a VWSH would be a pivotal point in whether or not i bought a car!

I, like you, do most of the minor bits of vehicle maintenance and leave the rest to those that are in the know, and i certainly wouldnt say that my car is worth any less as a result!!

just my 2p's worth. hope this helps :D

don't know how much VW-dealers down your way charge but i have my storm get an annual inspection(complete with oil+filter change)done every Dec by the local VW-main dealer works, out round the £100-ish mark(plus cost of oil-which i supply to then) and keeps a stamp in the book....in between i get an oil+filter change and any other mechanical work done by people i trust to work on my storm............most people who are in the market for a Corrado or any hi-perfrormance car will nine times out of ten always put a great value on it having a full main-dealer history.....even tho the bulk of main-dealers haven't really got a clue on whats best for the Corrado(luckily all the times i've used specialist cars, aberdeen i have always noticed a difference afterwards and had no compalints over there servicing).......i keep my VW history up for the simple reason that if i ever needed to sell(which i don't intend to btw.....but if circumstances changed etc)then having the FVWSH will appeal to more people and therefore make it easier to sell

just my 2pence worth
