changing hydraulic tappets, what else should i do

Recommended Posts

i think my tappets are starting to wear out a bit after 127,000 miles (a bit tappy in the mornings) and if changing to 15w40 dosnt sort it i will be changing the tappets anyway, is it worth doing anything else at the same time apart from getting my rocker cover powder coated ?

i also sometimes hear the same tapping half way up the revs when on part load could it be anything else other than the tappets ?

where is best to get them as i have only just found out ECP have opened a branch in chester

Hello mate,

If your car's a g60 it

could also be the con-rod small

end bearings that are on the way out.

One way to check hyd tappets is to

press down on them with a screw driver and

see if they can be compressed, more than 1mm play

means they may have to be changed, also if they feel "spongy"

If it's a 16valver,be careful when positioning the cam cver gasket,

sometimes it can get dislodged when it's tightened down thus p@ssing

oil out.,Same goes for the small half moon seals.

16v being noisey first thing in the morning is not unusual especially if its been modifed with performance cams so the tappets take longer to build up pressure i found using the lighest oil i could get (0/40w)in synthetic form has eliminated the noise completely even at first start up
