another sluggish 1.8 16v

just had car back today.had cambelt and tensioner changed,also power steering oil changed and forte fuel cleaner stuff put in the tank.

 

it is running rather sluggish though an no-where near as 'torquey' as usual imo. could it be the forte stuff buggereing up the fuelling and therefore performance.as when it came straight from the garage it was stalling at junctions a few times. poss fuel starvation due to forte messing up fuel mixture?

if so how long till this stuff gets through and out of the system.

i always use super unleaded to if this is any help.

If they were fitted at a garage I would take it back to them, they've obviously not got the timing right when they put the belt back on.

Thats the belt and crank and cam timing, not ignition timing.

 

All the symptoms of a belt whch is a couple of sprockets out. Retiming the ignition will not sort it as it's the valve timing that has been affected. If the belt had been put on correctly, most likely the ignition timing will not have changed and no adjustment needed.

i'll take your word for it,

does this mean belt has to come off and be re-aligned/adjusted, or can it be left on and adjusted?

Maybe, but it can be done in situ.

 

The first thing the garage should do is check that the cam and engine crank line up correctly on the timing marks. They should be able to do this without taking it apart again.

 

If the belt is out, it means taking off some covers and slackening the tensioner. With the engine crank at its timing mark, they should be able to ease the belt and OHC into the correct place. Retension the belt. Then turn the engine by hand a full revolution. Then recheck the timing marks align.

 

Bottom line, if it's out, then it's at their cost.

too late! its gone back to the garage! seems to be running abit better but still not perfect.do reckon you could have a look at it some time then?

i can look at it, suck air through my teeth and tut....but im no mechanic mate...there's people in the Cardiff area who specialise and know about these engines..i'd recomend you take it to somewhere with a bit more knowledge of the car. There's N&G motors in Splott (( 02920 461 661 VAG Specialist )), Dubusiness in Taffs Well (( A G60 owner 02920 813 969 )) , Theres also a VW mechanic in Grangetown....try those first .... :D
