Project Camper

Recommended Posts

I know this may not be of interest to some. But for those that like all dubs I thought I'd start a small thread to show the progress of restoring a VW camper van. I think Henny has some experience of playing with these old air cooled dubs. I’ll probably need some advice at some point Henny.

I've only posted a picture of its original condition and how it is today after two days work. For those who would like to see more I'll put more pictures on my server. I'll keep the pictures in this post to major developments only to save Corrado forum bandwidth.

More pictures and cheesy comments; http://www.dogsbodyoutsourcing.com/camp ... page_1.htm *EDIT (sorry dead link now)

Thanks to Gav (H100) sending me his impact driver and advice on getting a compressor, I’ve got pretty far in the time I’ve spent on it. (Off to paypal to send Gav some cash)

If anyone’s a bodywork specialist could you make yourself know as I need advice on buying a spray gun amongst other things, thanks!

EDIT* Is the page on my server working okay? (link in first post)

The forum isn’t letting me attach pics so here some linked from my site.

Nice one Bigben, will do! With the amount of welding I've got to do I should be fecking ace at it by the time it's finished! Then its time to unleash all the skills I've learnt onto something water cooled. ;-)

EDIT* Ben16v I'll ring you tomorrow morning mate. You've missed most of the fun bits, riping stuff off and screw drivering pannels, etc. Engines got to come out but I was gonna angle grind the rear pannel to make it easyier. Got to borrow Sam's grinder first though!

COOL! Wish I had the space/time to do one of these up again... 8)

Right, you NEED to do a google search for "Alan H Schofield" and find his contact details. He makes repair panels and can source original panels for bay window and splitties too... 8) They're spot on fit wise and aren't stupidly priced either... 8)

Any help you need, just drop me a line... it's been a while since I've played with a Bay, but after doing one, there's bits you just don't ever forget... :|

You NEED to get hold of Porsche Apart up in Bolton too... Get a set of late 944 turbo rear calipers (around £70) and some 300mm disks and suddenly you've got a camper with 4pot Brembo/porsche brakes which actually STOPS! 8)

What are your plans for it? There's soooooo much you can do to these things it's untrue... The engines are a doddle to work on too, once you've done it a couple of times, dropping the engine out in under 30mins isn't difficult!

Good luck! 8)

Nice one Henny! I've got a "Cool Air" catalogue which lists most panels. Its those headlight bowls pictured on my site that I cant find a easy repair panel for.

Plans,

The interior looked okay when it was in. But now its out and I've had a good look at it and its a bit shabby. The plan is to cut out new mdf or ply panels and cover them in a new Beach wood laminate. It should look a bit cleaner and modern. (if a little ikea)

The exterior is going to remain two tone. Maybe a white top with the same blue as my golf bottom. But I would really like to do the bottom nimbus grey, top still white, wheels red with chrome hub caps and white wall tyres, red curtains, assorted other red detailing, quite a bit of new chrome and powder coating in the engine bay. Chrome engine bay bits are dirt cheap for these baby’s! Also, possibly a thin red strip between the grey and white paint.

I don’t think there going to be much custom work done, like fitting early chrome bumpers or anything because of the cost. So fare the cost of buying all the tools, etc is going to mean that there won’t be much money for many mods.

dropping the engine out in under 30mins isn't difficult!

I've helped someone fit one back in before and it took about that to get into place. Apparently with the rear panel removed it can be done in 15mins!! 8)

CaiosG60 PWR, I used to be able to do a clutch on a Camper in under 40 minutes... that's from the customer driving it in, to driving it away again... 8)

They used to be amazed that as they went off with the boss to pay, by the time they got back we'd got the engine out, old clutch off and were fitting the new clutch! 8)

I've had a '72 Bay myself for about 9 months or so, slowly doing it up (hence been spending more time on the air-cooled forums than on here lately(sorry!) . If you get stuck drop me a line. Some excellent Forums out there for air-cooled - Just Kampers Forum is nice place, and of course Volkszone is great for air-cooled. Enjoy, Corrado's are great in their way, Bays are great in their own way too. I love 'em both to bits.

Hi Randal / All! I'm fine thanks, still a Corrado devotee, but been on a steep air-cooled learning curve since bought the Bay about ten months ago, and getting heavily in to the air-cooled scene. Still cherish the Corrado though, so I'm still about! Adios for now!
