mantaraman 0 Posted August 5, 2005 Hi all Car is a 16V 1.8 '91. Done 140K. After a few miles (i.e. when it's warm) if I select reverse, it judders a lot and clonks. Not so bad when it's cold. It feels like the engine is moving but only in reverse. Do you think it's time for some new engine mounts? Benj
Supercharged 2 Posted August 5, 2005 Yep, i'd be checking the mounts as the first point of call!
RW1 0 Posted August 5, 2005 Combination of front engine mount past it's best and the clutch not biting smoothly. Front mount will cure it short term but the clutch be far away from the end of it's life I suspect or may have oil on the friction plates due to a seal leak in the bell housing. bcstudent 0 Posted August 5, 2005 I doubt the car will be on its original clutch at 140k. Do you have any idea if it's been replaced? For the record, I've recently replaced the clutch in my 1.8 16v but the front engine mount and gearbox mount are knackered. I have the same symptoms you're describing.
