Using 1.9L diesel (MK2 or MK3 Golf) bottom end ??

Recommended Posts

Just had a thought, would it be possible to use the MK2/ 3 Golf diesel (NA or turbo) bottom end in conjunction with different pistons to carry out a 1.9L conversion to a Corrado G60 supercharged (or turbocharged) ?

Maybe just being dense here but this would seem a cheaper way of doing this conversion as they are readily available for not a lot of cash,

Cheers

I would have thought not because diesels don't rev anywhere near as high as petrol engines, so the bearings on a diesel bottom end probably wouldn't cope too well with 4k+ rpm.

Struan meant using the bare block with relevant pistons to make a 1.9 petrol engine dude, not using the diesel bottom end, as is, with a G60 head, LOL!

Get back in your box! :lol:

It depends why it's 1900, the crank, the bore or both? I doubt the bearings would have any issues spinning faster..

well the bore and stroke of a vw 1.9 tdi engine is as follows

bore = 79.5

stroke = 95.5

as we all know to work out displacement from then we do the following::

bore x bore x stroke x 0.7854 x number of cylinders

so that means the diesel puts out 1896cc

The G60 being 81 x 86.4 of course means the pistons will not fit in the holes.

The only non-diesel vw engine I know of that has a bore of 79.5 are the early 1600 engines.

However it should be possible to bore out a diesel block quite considerably considering the strength they need to withstand the compression on a diesel, so if you had a diesel bottom end and then fitted g60 pistons with a bore of 81mm you would (in theory) have displacement of 1968cc which gives you a 1900 (well closer to 2.0) bottom end of extreme strength
