andy 0 Posted August 11, 2005 Hi, can anyone help? I've just got my spare VR6 project car back together, its had new clutch, all chain parts, new valves and tappets. I've started it tonight and it leapt into life beautifully but.... I have a tappety noise. I replaced the tappets to try and eliminate any future noise so am a bit annoyed. Anyone got any experience of this? I know it could be a dodgy new tappet, but I find that unlikely. Also wondering if there is any "procedure" for running in new tappets..... surfer.vr6 0 Posted August 11, 2005 know the feeling mate just spent a grand doing the timing chains and clutch plus a head skim to find out i have got a noisy tappet tried 0 40 mobil 1 but still the same
andy 0 Posted August 11, 2005 Mines cost me £1100 quid in parts alone, I've done all the work myself (apart from the slight head skim). Have you been using yours since the work? Did you replace your tappets?
dr_mat 0 Posted August 11, 2005 Many many people complain of noisy tappets both before AND after replacing them on VR6s. A lot of it comes down to duff tappets from GSF, but I'm sure it can't *all* be related to that.
andy 0 Posted August 11, 2005 I'm sure Kevhaywire said that GSF tappets are the same as the VW ones. It really shouldn't be noisy with brand new ones, its not a load of clattering it just sounds like one or two....aagh.
dr_mat 0 Posted August 12, 2005 Some GSF tappets are the same as VW ones, yes. But not all.. (GSF switch suppliers any time they like, depending on what's available and cheap.) I am sure I have one noisy one too. This is the second set.. There is always the probability that it's some slightly blocked oil line inside the head that's causing all these people to report problems. These cars are pretty old now! Guest Posted August 12, 2005 I'll jump in on this one, as i've had the same problem. I replaced all my tappets with brand new ones from VW when i did a head rebuild. It was fine for about 6 months until i did an oil change. This was a couple of years ago though. I recently had a service at my local specialists, but a week before i took it in, i poured in some engine flush, and did an oil change using some cheap cr@p oil. This cured it!!! BUT, after i had the service the tapping came back... However, my engine has been running alot smoother and less tappety since i did the track day at Castle Combe a few weeks back!! Geo 0 Posted August 12, 2005 New tappets can be noisy for a while until they get fully bedded in. How long have you run the engine for? When I rebuilt the engine in my vento VR6 the tappets were noisy for a few hundred miles afterwards, they are fine now though.......
andy 0 Posted August 12, 2005 All is ok it would seem, had only run the engine for less than 5 mins, just a few 1 or 2 min bursts at idle, didn't like to press on until I thought a bit more about it. Ran it up this morning and it was instantly quieter, brought her up to temperature then ran her at 2500 rpm for a couple of mins and its really settled down. I think it just needed thoroughly warming up and a bit of settling etc, just didn't expect any rattling tbh, thought the new tappets would take care of that. Oh well, a happy chappy now. Thanks for advice :-)
dr_mat 0 Posted August 12, 2005 Well .. tappets are kept quiet by oil pressure, so if you'd not even run the car up there's little or no hope of them coming up to pressure... We were all assuming you'd run them normally for a few hundred miles!
andy 0 Posted August 13, 2005 I hear what your saying, but..... I've fitted a fair few before and not had this problem. Even when I've left my car a week without starting it would only make a slight clatter for a second or two at most, then settle. I would expect the oil pressure to be sufficient after a minute. A minute of tappety noise is an eternity when you've spent a few weeks putting it all back together! Still all's well now, runs like a peach! Now for that MOT.... Kevin Bacon 5 Posted August 13, 2005 I'm sure Kevhaywire said that GSF tappets are the same as the VW ones. It really shouldn't be noisy with brand new ones, its not a load of clattering it just sounds like one or two....aagh. The tappets are made by INA. GSF ones are the same as VW ones but it's the tappets with no markings on at all that should be avoided. VR6s are just tappey engines full stop and the breather box amplifies the tapping. kongo127 0 Posted August 13, 2005 Is it safe to use engine flush on a G60? My tappets are noisy now and then aswell, i wonder if an engine flush could help... :? Any reccomended brand? 8)
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted August 13, 2005 Not a fan of flushing but if you must, a proper flushing oil is better, rather than that Wynns cr@p. Drain the oil, refill with Comma flushing oil, run it as instructed, drain that, change the filter and refill with normal engine oil.
kongo127 0 Posted August 13, 2005 Alright Kev! What a "responsive" reply! Thanks!

Sorry if this over complicates things but are you saying some of the INA ones have no markings...or that INA are ok from either source but other makes of tappets may have no markings and are best avoided?
