Alternative Corrado Automatic Transmission

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know it the above is possible? I have a corrado VR6 auto, 94M, 4 speed 096 transmission. The gearbox is on its way out at 83K, and i am thinking of the possibilities of changing it for a different auto transmission (looked into the conversion to manual, but kinda like the auto box, just wish it was better!)

At VWNW Tatton Park, Sunday, I spoke to someone who said he knew somebody who had upgraded to a Passat 5 speed auto transmission from a Passat VR6. I also spoke to someone who told me that the VR6 engine is fitted in several vehicles including the Audi A/S3, Sharan/Galaxy could it maybe be in some seat's to?

As these vehicles all come with auto options, would it be possible to fit a box from one of these cars, maybe an Audi Tiptronic being the most favoured option if at all possible, anyone out there technically minded, or knows of anyone who has done this, any problems i should consider first, ie ECU, Driveshafts

Any comments appreciated, Thanks, Caroline

Hi Caroline - I'm looking into that too. My 'box is okay at the mo and like you I dont really mind the auto, just wish it was better, as you said.

The issue is linking the auto box ecu with the engine ecu. Otherwise it may also be a case of mating the gearbox bellhousing to the engine block and getting the right driveshafts to fit too. I'd be surprised if there were any "plug and play" boxes tho'.

hoping to get past the bellhousing problem by only using a box that has come from a car using the same VR6 engine, apparently, that part should be the easy bit, as you say, am running a little short on time tho, as my gearbox is getting noisy, if you can get any info let me know, and i'll do likewise

Have you changed the tranny fluid and filter yet? Also, get a pressure test done via the diagnostics port on the top of the box (its the round connector), which should give some idea of teh problem. I think someone mentioned that an autoshop can change & check the gears via the diagnostics - if that is possible give it a try and let me know too!!!

How easy is it to stick a regular 5-speed manual VR6 'box in there? Obviously the linkage & gearshift handle have to go in, but is it really a nightmare?

Storm (Rik) has done it and it doesnt seem too much problem, only really need a few special tools and a few days and of course GOOD WEATHER, lol. Wiring atc seems a bit fiddly though and electrics are not really my fave part of the car anyway.

Good plan.... needs the ECU and a signal from the Engine ECU too.... I'm sure it's doable. Gonna try it for the forum?

Dual-clutch auto boxes, shift quicker than the human eye! Apparently they knock close to half a second off the new GTIs 0-60 sprint.

Also apparently (having never driven either derivative of the GTI!) they're a bit uninvolving - one road-tester said it was so good you just tended to leave it in full auto mode, but then that left you without the involvement of changing gear.

I can see the attraction though...

The DSG is the one i am really aiming at

apparently its mated up to the VR6 Engine in a TT?

however, any option different to the 4 speed 096 would be considered, have spoke to a company today who may be able to sort the driveshaft problem just have the ecu thing to think about now!

Had this done, there is low pressure in the gearbox, and the torque convertor sounds on the way out, there is a noise after every gear change, and the car struggles to get into 4th, think i'm gonna run out of time on this thread, as the car is almost undriveable over 40mph now, shame as i would like to have a go at updating it, esp as the driveshaft problem seems do-able, will hold on as long as i can and see if anyone else comes up with any ideas! the guy at the gearbox centre said it is 'full of pitfalls! but he will look into it as anything is possible' if anyone knows of ANYBODY who has attempted this please let me know asap! time is running out

I may be teaching you to suck eggs here but, I thought I’d give you a brain dump on this.

One of your issues is whether the Corrado ECU will interface any other gearbox. On ETKA it is only listed for the Corrado. Thats probably the change characteristics as the same gearbox was used in the Golf / passat. I doubt it would work with anything but the 4spd box. If the wiring follows the same pattern then the 5Spd may be viable in conjunction with the 5spd ECU. The connector for the ECU seems to be the same no matter what 4spd auto we are looking at so that is promising. If you compare the wiring diagram from a 1995 model year car to 1997 (Golf) and the wiring is the same than I think its safe to assume a late 4 spd auto with its associated ECU will transplant into a Corrado. There is a wiring information forum on Vortex that can give you this information.

Corrado ECU part numbers:

096 927 731 plus a two letter suffix or 096 927 733 BE (ADY engine only)

For a 2003 Golf they are

O1M 927 733 plus a two letter suffix. Interestingly the transition from 096 to O1M happened in 1995.

Your biggest issue with a DSG is going to be finding one and then if you have to, how to splice it into the VR6 Engine ECU, that is farkin complex.

On the Corrado the driveshafts are the same auto or manual. My theory is that the gearbox housing and size would probably be the same. Interestingly on the Mk 4 the driveshafts for an auto are different from the manual, they are referred to as tripodic.

So in conclusion I would say its either a new std auto box; or an attempt at transplanting a later 4 speed; or a manual conversion.

You didn't buy that car from a guy near Hemel Hempstead last year did you?

Storm

Car came from Epsom, Surrey, March this year, but it may have been in hemel hempstead year before? Guy i got it from bought it in November 04, I think from Eclipse sports cars! but the previous owner also didnt have it long, 6 months during 2004, serviced at Breeze VW, wherever that is, the car came with full history, and several MOTS, was also HPi clear so reckoned pretty safe, however, had the factory fit immobiliser problem! and i reckon that may have been why the previous 2 owners got rid of it in such a hurry, let me know any details you have on the hemel hempstead car and we'll see if its the same one, should i be worried?

Anyway, looks like you may have answered the question on the gearbox, unless anyone else has any options, it may be just having the one thats in it recon'd, guy in Middleton reckons he can repair the one i have to keep the costs down, just a shame, not that i am unhappy with the 4spd, just would be nice to see what it would have been like, had they put a later box in it!

This cars plate used to be J70NNY, if anyone knows any of its history it would be appreciated, off the topic a little, but would be interesting to find out, any way the car is now sort of off the road, the gearbox seems to have a mind of its own lately and i cant chance it reliability wise, so im in my escort van till i can get it fixed!

Well, i had to give up!, car was spending more time on the drive than i was driving her, so she is now at the automatic gearbox co in middleton, manchester, having the gearbox repaired (this is far cheaper than putting a recon one in!), i will let everyone know how it gets on, i am still interested in the project, it would be great to know if another gearbox would go in, but i ran out of time! maybe next year!

i've a funny feeling that the audi tiptronic box wasn't offered in a VR-engined Audi....from memory Audi's V6 isn't a VR6......but their own "conventional" V6.similar outputs and capacity to a VR6 IIRC

Solitaire, get a repair report from them to find out exactly what the problem was and what they did to repair it. That would make some interesting reading - and one assumes they won't make half of it up!
