VR6 has flat spots

Recommended Posts

Try replacing the Cam sensor too.

Exactly the same sensor, but with a different connector I believe. Only costs about 40-50 quid as VW know the car WILL run without it!!

You may think I'm completely mad when you read this, but bear with me...

Drove to Birmingham yesterday and it drove like a bag of s**t for the first 80 miles or so. Just as I get to the M5 the air temperature from the blowers seems to get cooler and the car starts performing as normal again!!

Am I going mad or is this a possible fault??

Please help!!!!!

The way of the VR :-)

Mine seems to particularly enjoy breathing in 19 degree air. The ambient could be 2 or 3 deg either way and it makes a big differnce. But at 19, jees...she flies. That isn't a good thing though as it points to a fuelling/ignition issue, which hopefully will be sorted soon.....but anyway, no you're not mad, we all are for buying these pesky cars ;-)

I just wonder if you've got a double fault of both the 0513 & 515 faults. I think it would be worth having another look at the stored faults.

Changed the leads and plugs last week and it's driving a hell of alot better!! :)

However, it still has the problem from a cold start!!!??!!

It only happens for about 2 minutes from start up. VAG-COM still reads the Hall Effect Sensor fault, but the Speed Sensor fault has gone.

Thanks for all the advice so far and I've done most of the things you guys suggested but I really don't want to spend much more on it....

Any ideas?

Generally 00515 fault is usually genuine as the camshaft position sensor. The fault needs to be cleared after the replacement CPS is fitted. 0.5 hr DIY (£37+VAT).

Time to re-open this thread I think...

Right, since last time, the following has ben done...

90K service + changed induction kit back to original air box- Drove really well for about 3 days, then the problem re-occured.

Took car to VW specialist. He drove the car from cold and said I had an "intermittent mis-fire". Cleaned the MAF, ISV, changed the leads again, (better quality ones) and changed the colipack. (It was cracked).

Again, the car drove like a dream for a couple of days, but the fault has come back yet again.

I never thought I'd say this, but I'm really starting to dislike my rado!!

The only thing I haven't done is replace the CPS.

Please help!! Again....

I've also started to notice a strange smell since the coilpack was fitted..

Sort of a burning plastic smell.....

Could the new colipack be knackered?

Have you changed the CPS though as mentioned above a few times?

Interesting you mention it does it for 2 mins when cold as that is exactly how long it takes for the lambda heater to get the probe up to operating temperature. There could be a link.... has the lambda been checked?

Get the CPS changed. Only about £30 from VW. Can take about 30 bhp from the engine and can be an intermittant problem.

Does the car sometimes go like a train then other times is a pile of rubbish??

It started off only occuring whilst cold, now it's happening intermittently now matter how long I've been driving.

I've not replaced the CPS yet as I really don't want to tell the missus I have to fork out even more...

Especially when I showed her the bill after changing the leads nad coilpack!!

Yes, easy peasy!!

Take off plastic covers on engine. Spline tools required or allen keys if you dont have them. Undo the coilpack and move out of the way. CPS is just above coilpack on right hand side of engine. There is one allen bolt holding it in place. Undo that and wiggle the sensor free from its hole.

They put the new one in.

Happy Days......job done.

Scanned it with VAG-COM last night and brought the same fault as previously mentioned...

- 0513 Engine Speed Sensor (No Signal)

- 0515 Camshaft Sensor (Short To Positive)

I'm sorting out 0515 this weekend hopefully, but what's the problem with the speed sensor?

What is it and how is it sorted?

- 0513 Engine Speed Sensor (No Signal)

means the engine was not running when you scanned the ECU.
