Garage says I need a new coil pack at a masive cost ...

My VR6 ('94) went in for a service today and to check out why the engine dies when coasting to a stop (I've cleaned thre isv)/bit of running running for first few mins when cold. The garage phoned me to say the coil pack was faulty - a new pack + HT leads and fitting will cost a bit over £400!!! They say VR6's a re suspect to coil pack problems - does this sound likely versus my problems??? And do they really cost that much new???

Coil pack is £200 and the leads are £120, both including the shat....so their estimate is OK until you question the remaining £80!! £80 labour for 10 minutes work is outrageous.

 

Buy the parts and fit them yourself! GSF do cpacks for half that price and the leads are cheaper too, although I'd be tempted to get the VW leads as they're superior quality. You can do your own tests. When packs or leads go, the engine will feel like it's running on 4 or 5 cylinders under load, does this happen, particularly in the wet?

 

You can also get a water spray bottle and soak the leads and coilpack at night and look for any obvious arcing. If you can't see any, you can tell them to stick their diagnosis.

 

Cutting out when coasting is common. The 4 main suspects there are:-

 

Fuel pump getting tired - £100

MAF sensor - Big cash from VW, or £150 from a Bosch tuner.

Throttle sensor - £40

Blue temp sensor - £10

 

It can also be caused by a sticking Idle filling valve, which can be cleaned out with carb cleaner.

 

There is also a little piston that catches the throttle and lowers it gently to rest. As the VR ages, this adjustable damper could do with moving up a bit. It's adjusted by slackening the 13mm nut and winding it up a few turns.

 

So the upshot is, VW may say it's £400 of easy to replace parts without looking at anything else, but I'd urge you to do some basic tests first before handing over that sort of money.

 

Where are you based? Hopefully not Aus as your name suggests, as a number of us have a diagnostic tool we can use to scan your engine and get an idea of what's going on.

Have got a vr6 and the coil pack, ht leads and breather hose went tits up a couple of weeks back. Got my local vw specialist to replace the lot for just shy of £300.

i have the same problem my vr is running like its on 4

i have taken the coil pack off its real easy 4 bolts mines cracked for england a new one from gsf is 120 quid vw wanted 200 quid b4 the dreaded

like you i have some more testing to do like the water test to fully isolate the faulty part

unfortunatly i took some bad advise from a mate and was told a new cat will solve it so i brought a new cat £115 inc vat if you need one pm me and i will tell you where and also fitted a magnex cat back system (sweet and a piece of piss to fit and fits really well) but did not cure the ill

sh1t happens i guess but hay the stainless looks real nice
