Noisy VR6 Alternator

Recommended Posts

hi, i have just noticed my alternator becoming very noisy on ma raddo vr'6, is it better to fit a new one or get this one to and alternator specialist and get it serviced/repaired? How much is a new one if anyone knows, or how much for a refurb? Any help would be great, sounds pants when it keeps whining away, lol!

If it's "whining" that may be a sign the battery is wanting charge all the time. (I presume it's not a mechanical sound like a bearing)

How olds the battery. That may be on it's last legs and not retaining keeping charge too well.

The alternator will whine after the engine is started but go quiet once the battery is back up to working charge levels. Usually a couple of minutes.

Alternators tend to be exchange items these days unless you want to pull it apart and use another one to make good one out of two. Small internal parts are available for some but other's they are not.

If it's the VR6, then exchange will be your route.

back on topic blokes... pfft...

i think my alternator is making a racket but it only seems to be when its been raining/is raining... when its damp is makes a really nasty whining noise while the engines running, but doesnt do it when its dry...? the alternator was replaced in Jan before i got her, could it just be a bearing...??

Check the belt tension Scarlett. Approximately 1.25 cm (0.5 inch) deflection in the longest length between pullies.

While you're there doing this, check the belt is in good condition and no frilly edges. Change if the belt is looking tired. Bosch brand seem to be sound belts. Halfords - had too many strip themselves, not agood make the ones marked with green print.
