White2505 0 Posted December 9, 2005 looks like either a big or little end bearing has given up the ghost. (still I manged about 8 weeks of ownership before the first catastrophic failure!) So while the bottom end is being 'done' is there anything else I should consider having sorted while it's being worked on??

Guest Posted December 9, 2005  Im always half empty....So the missus says anyways. Am i right in thinking you can do the main bearings by just removing the sump? Or are you doing a full on strip down? If thats the case then valve stem seals id say are a must

h100vw 0 Posted December 9, 2005 Big ends only take an hour with the sump off. Little ends need the head off. Much more likely to be the big ends, a deep knocking that varies with engine speed. If they are just starting to go, they can be heard on a light throttle about 2000 revs. If they are well gone, like my 145K 1.8 passat, they knock from tickover to the redline.
Guest Posted December 9, 2005 Either way.....not a good thing to happen! Dreading the sound of a big end rattle, but its gonna happen again soon. Had it twice already. Anyways good luck with it mate. Let us know how you're doing :)
White2505 0 Posted December 10, 2005 rev dependant, LOUD, went from a wonder what that flapping noise (only just able to hear it) to BL**dy hell that sounds expensive within a mile. So much for the engine having been rebuilt 11K miles ago!
White2505 0 Posted December 10, 2005 just had it confirmed, number one big end bearing shell has disintergrated damaging the number one crank journal into the bargain. the head, block and crank are off to the engineering shop on monday for a full once over.
