Having head gasket and chains done -whats the run in period?

Recommended Posts

I'm getting my head gasket and chains done plus a 6 branch exhaust manifold.

Would I have to run it in for about 500 or is it 1000 miles? I'm assuming I should not go over 3000revs until this is done?

Thank you for any help.

No running in required on those items.

I would recommend you use the solid polymer upper pad and corresponding tensioning bolt.

I would also recommend after fitment of the new chains and pads, turn the engine over a few times with no plugs in it and the crank sensor disconnected before putting the manifold back on etc. And then recheck the timing. This will ensure that A) there is sufficient oil pressure in the tensioning bolt and B) the engine doesn't kick back and cause the chains to skip a tooth.

You might want to do the clutch whilst you're down there too and only use a genuine VW one as aftermarket ones can cause juddering. If you can stretch to £75 exchange for a new flywheel, I'd highly recommend that aswell.

Thanks for your replies guys. How would my car feel with a new flywheel?
