double-6s 0 Posted February 14, 2006 Hi there. I've got a 2.8 lump in my old goluf that i'm going to take out and get bored and re-built for my C. Already got a rebuilt head lined up. Trouble is I know diddly-squat about engines really, so does anyone know of a guide of any sort for dismantling and taking out a VR engine? I want to learn, but don't want to f*ck up my 2.8 engine whist removing it! Thanks :)

Stan 24v 0 Posted February 17, 2006 Dude, if you dont want to kncker your lump, I have a 2.9 lump in need of a rebore which you can buy, not sure how much but a decent offer will see it going your way ;)
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted February 17, 2006 82.5mm mahle pistons needed for reboring that and they're quite expensive. VW still have all the standard 2.9 82mm pistons and rings for reboring a 2.8 tho.
Stan 24v 0 Posted February 19, 2006 $800 from the states, plus $100 shipping ;) http://www.eiptuning.com/eip/vw6cylinderpistons.html
VR6 0 Posted February 19, 2006 I think even I could get the engine out and I'm next to useless. Getting it back in would be a *completely* different story!!

VR6 0 Posted February 19, 2006 Sorry fella, I wasn't having a pop at all :) Taking things apart is fairly easy ... putting them back in working condition is another challenge! lol From my limited knowledge of the VR engine, I'd approach it by disconnecting all the necessary pipework and electrics (and document everything with pics and notes), undo the engine mounts and hopefully hoist it out! Haynes manual re-fitting is the same process in reverse  /Haynes manual
double-6s 0 Posted February 19, 2006 no worries dude. bit touchy because of my newly re-modelled C. as far as i know there is no haynes manual for a vr??? have been given a link to another manual that looks ok though
VR6 0 Posted February 19, 2006 The Bentley manual is what you want! If you take enough pictures of what you disconnect/take off, putting it all back shouldn't be too tricky....
double-6s 0 Posted February 19, 2006 you've not met me though mate ;) not very gifted in the mechanics department! then again, thats why i'm doing it..... edit: and cos i want a 3.1 vr!
Stan 24v 0 Posted February 21, 2006 edit: and cos i want a 3.1 vr! You sure you dont want my lump then? i could get Andy to rebore it ready for collection ;) Where are you getting the pistons from? The cheapest ones I saw when I was looking were the ones in the link on the previous page mate.
