VR Tensioner Pulley

Recommended Posts

After searching for a while on the forum i found the intermittent metalic sound from the engine was the tensioner bearing (think theres also a sound clip on here) I have just changed this using the info on knowledge base. Now just started the car and the sound is no where near as obvious as it used to be but its still there if u listen very very carefully, so although the bearing change did quieten it its still not solved it what else could it possibly be?

I've just noticed this noise on mine - literally yesterday. Its like a slight tapping noise that only coccurs above 3000 rpm. Plus te tensioner pulley seems to be getting awfully warm, just the outer portion mind you, nearer to the air filter that is screwed into the head. The moving part is also warm but nowhere near as.

I changed the tensioner last year for one from here, but perhaps the bearing is old? But would a worn tensioner bearing make a tappety-type noise and that too above a certain engine speed? Nothing seems loose around there, no pipes or other things knocking against each other.

strange - no noise today, although i only went to 3000 rpm briefly. Oil is splashing around nicely.

Can the engine run for a few minutes without the tensioner without any adverse effects?

just for the record, i replaced teh pulley bearing - the old one ran well but was noisy. The new one felt 'stiff' as though there were a huge amount of grease in it. Anyway, this seems to have resolved te problem, i'll give a good drive tomorrow and get back if there is any change. Otherwise, this can tap as well as rumble like a normal bearing, by the looks of it.
