Friends are more important than cars!

Recommended Posts

After spending a while preparing my car I was really looking forward to this last weekend. I was booked into the Corrado Club stand at GTI International and the ferry was booked for Holland to vist MIVW on Sunday.

I had a good day out on Saturday, Thanks Tempest for organising the CCGB display, and thought the show and venue was a big improvement on the last couple of years but with numbers down and some issues on prices for traders and displays continuing I hope it is not to little too late, GTI International needs the support to survive. Anyway after a good day I set off at about 4 pm to head up for the ferry at Hull.

Unfortunately after being caught in slow moving traffic after a few miles my water temp shot up and the warning light came on. I quickly pulled over and topped up my water after loosing some removing the expansion cap and set off. Withinn minutes the temp was straight back up and I had no choice but to stop. I was accompanied by a friend Dave Freeman and his son in his MK4 Four Motion and we all came to a stop and I called the RAC. The RAC were very prompt but I knew it would need recovering. This was confirmed and after some quick work a recovery vehicle was ordered. I suggested to Dave that he continued without me taking my passenger as it was almost certain we'd miss the ferry. Dave wouldn't hear of it despite it almost certainly meaning loosing out on the trip. The RAC bent over backwards to help and having phoned the ferry company to tell them of our dilemma we had a deadline for embarkation of 7.30pm to work towards. Having made the big dicision for me to send my car home unescorted at 6.15pm we set off with 120 miles to cover. No chance  . Well maybe..MIVW was great, pity my car didn't make it but good friends are priceless.

Not sure, hoping its only the thermostat but perhaps its the water pump? Anyone any thoughts?

sounds like the thermostat to me. I had the same thing on my mams motor.

The temp lifts up to about 120 degrees and stays there.

The third speed fan should have been audible at that temp! Sounds like a hovercraft.

Are speeds 1 and 2 working?

If not fan related, then yeah, sounds like the stat has jammed shut as the other chaps suggested.

Fans didn't come on until I stopped and heat was rising further still, fuses for fans seem ok. The radiator was still cool though.

defo thermostat Gareth, mine did the same last winter, stuck closed and got very hot very quickly. The fans wont come on in this situation as the rad is cold.

I also later found that my fans were not working as they should have been anyway, I changed both the rad fan switch and the temp switch in the thermostat housing and the fans work as they should now. Mine were only coming on at 110deg on the fast speed.
