Recessed screw removal - All done!!

Recommended Posts

Having fun and games trying to get all 3 headlight screws out!

I've got new bulbs and lenses to go on and all that’s stopping me now are the recessed screws on each light unit which are seriously knackered!

I've begun drilling one out on the passenger side where I can see the screw from behind the light, so I know what I’m drilling in to and this seems to be working. The other side is more difficult as I can't see what I’m drilling!!

Anyone got any handy rusty, knackered screw removal tips????

Oh and a recommendation to anyone who hasn't changed any screws under their engine bay to stainless........Do so now, while your able to!! :) :) :)

Had this problem also, just lined up the screwdriver and gave it a few good hits and managed to grip it enough to get it out!!

So went straight to the motor factors and bought some stainless jobs and replaced all, guess i was just lucky but drilling was the next step!!

you can buy a screw and nut remover set from halfords, it is a set of 5 or 6 drill type bits (various sizes) with a reverse thread . the way they are meant to work is when you tighten them (anti-clockwise) they remove the screw/nut.

i bought them to loosen a bolt on my throttle body but couldnt get access, so i had to chisel it off.

they are not dear , under a tenner i think

good luck

The passenger side one isn't too bad and is a bit of a case of not having the correct tools the thing is that i can actually see that screw from behind the light unit, so i know what I'm drilling. The drivers side one is a pain as I've got no idea if I've got the screw or the back of the light!

Right, you'll be pleased to know that all is now done!

Managed to get a long HSS drill bit onto the head of each screw and take the tops off, the problem then was that the thread of the screw was still in plastic. What we then had to do was bend the bracket where it screws into away from the light unit, once done removal was fine! Refitting was another challenge as the brackets where now in the wrong place, but a pair of pliers soon sorted that....

Replaced the bulbs with the Osram Siverstars and i can highly recommend them, i know that i can probably benefit from a uprated loom but the brightness of the lights I'd say are the same if not better than in my previous car........
