More bang less buck!

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

This is my first post and I'm new to the forum so hopefully I get it right.

I need some help with the age old problem of needing more power, I used to have the swiftest ride out of my friendship group but things have recently changed.

In the past week two of my friends have got themselves an MR2 Turbo (hugely gay) and an Audi A3 1.8t (nice but no character). The Audi is no big deal until it gets chipped but the rice-rocket is a massive thorn in my side.

I'm obviously safe in the knowledge that my 'rado is infinately cooler but needs power big time.

I have a 1990 1.8 valver with 115k and the following little tuning mods:

Full Milltek system

50mm inlet manifold

K&N panel filter

Recently been de-coked using ecotek power boost

Can anyone suggest anything I can do that really won't cost the earth? Anybody had good results with chips, Powerboost valves etc?

Cheers for listening

You aren't gonna get anywhere near the MR2 Turbo unless you spend a lot of cash and sticking a turbo on it!. But you could check out the 16v tuning guide on the wiki for cheaper upgrades to your engine!

FYI too.............the 1.8 16v KR can't be chipped as its mechanical Fuel injection,so has no real computer to be chipped

Bung in a 2L bottom out out of a Rado... 9A engine i think... that will give it a bit more power and torqe.. approx 180bhp ish??

Although I'd love to fit n.o.s and destroy that mobile hair-dresser mobile (can't believe he sold his mk2 16v golf for it) it would probably involve me having to sell a limb to afford it thus making driving in general more challenging and being caught in a vicious more speed less limbs circle.

Short of setting fire to it I'm gonna have to admit defeat from that one but the chipped 1.8T aint getting away that easy. The 2.0 bottom end sounds appealing.

Cheers for the replies peeps :)

On the plus side IIRC if you do turbo it the injection should keep up with fueling demands... To a point.....

Get the WUR modded by Stealth + 9A bottom end.

Did the Power Boost do anything? Expensive stuff- is it worth it?

Although I'm pretty new to it all I'm already hearing big things about Stealth...

Problem is I Live on the South coast (Weymouth) so its a bit of a drive, Is there anybody more local for me that are recommended?

If I get a rolling road tune am I gonna see much of an improvement?

I got the powerboost for £22 delivered off Ebay and I'd say it has definately made an improvement, Nothing massive but worth the money on a high miler. Whilst i was spraying it in the whole car was shaking and the engine was making a funny noise with smoke poring out the exhaust so it was definately burning something...Probably my bloody valve seals knowing my luck

I cant see you getting close to the MR2 turbo (With a top speed of 152mph and a 0-60 capability of 5.7 seconds) unless you do the same to the valver
