wrong tyre size on my storm?

hey, just bought a half decent mystic blue and it needs some tyres.

the tyres on it seem to be 195/50/15.

according to this forum the storm has 205/50/15.

what is going on here??? have i got a duff one???

First of all welcome to the forum and the car looks very nice! Its not a big deal though mate, 195/50/15's are fine on the storm wheels, i am running 215/40/16 on 9 inch wide rims!! And there are even people running 195's on 9 inch rims, MEGA STRETCH!!!!

However, it is not the recommended tyre size, and I believe that it could invalidate your insurance.

thanks very much, i will see about putting on 205's. there is a better choice it seems. it wont make too much of a difference tho, will it?

 

about the high rear, im not sure whats been done there, i will look into it.

Does it have standard springs and shocks? Because if it has been lowered slightly then the previous owner obviously didnt cut the bump stops down at the back which would make the back sit a lot higher than the front. Otherwise it may just be due to where its parked and the handbrake being on etc as they are very high standard and defo need dropping :)

You gotta say it's either parked in a hole or someone crawled under the back with a jack while nobody was looking.

But the correct size is 205/50/15, and you're probably sacrificing a little grip without the extra cm of width.

yep, you also appear to be right! i put on some firestones in 205/50/15 and i feel much better (down to the wire on front offside!)

 

still really wet round here so looking forward to a dry day to test them out!

If you are mechanically minded you can do this easily enough, it just involves taking the rear suspension out, splitting the shocks and springs and taking out the bump stop to cut down. If you are not mechanically minded then im sure a garage would do it cheap enough. What you have to do is cut the bump stop down the amount the car has been lowered ie if its been lowered 40mm then cut 40mm off of the bump stop :)

Hi StewyBenson, welcome to Corrado ownership. If you're ever in doubt, you can always look in the Knowledge Base for some DIY stuff and technical specs. In there is the Wheel and Tyre Size CLICK ME page which confirms what you need; 205/50/15.

 

At the bottom of the Wheels page is a link to another usefull page, the Tyre Bible CLICK. There you can see that different size tyres will fit.

 

Im on 15" (diameter) rims with 7" width. The rear tyres are 195/50/15 and work just fine.

 

Stewybenson, please be aware that when you put on new tyres they will feel different, firstly because its fresh new rubber which will move a lot more with the deeper tread. Also they may always feel different if you buy a different tyre brand/make to what you've got on; different being good or bad - you decide. Once you've found a tyre you like, I'd stick with it. There is a TYRE discussion thread HERE. A wider tyre will also feel different too, obviously, and as said, it can provide better feel/grip, pending the brand you choose. The Tyre Bible explains everything you need to know and will tell you what makes a difference; going to a wider tyre, you may find a slight adjustment of the pressures are needed, to suit your preference.
