Starter motor noise and front engine mount

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Well as it says, i have a noise when the starter turns over the engine on my vr6.

It always fires no probs but then i get a grinding type sound could it be a worn bearing? so wondered if it was possible to take out and clean or could it need replacement?

Any tips on doing so would be good as i've had a little search but couldn't really find anything.

Also i need to replace the front mount too, i have a vibra technics one which i'm sure i'll manage but any tips would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Kip.

Im no expert but is the starter not sticking in? Fomr what i understand they are meant to disengage once the engine is turned over.

Keep us posted on the VT mount, im keen to get a one of these on mine..

Hi goldie,

No it doesn't stick in just sounds awfull after its fired up,

I'm thinking it a worn bearing as i have to replace lots on cycle wheels at work and you get all sorts of noise if you road test a bike first then tap a couple of new ones in and its as quiet as a mouse :)

Let you know a bout the moun too but may be a week or so.

The VT mounts have a renewable rubber insert - presumably that's what he's replacing only.

And the starter sounds like it's probably staying engaged, or the ratchet on the sprocket is seized meaning that when the engine fires the starter gets pulled up to stupid revs instead of just freewheeling till you release the key.

The very end of the starter motor spindle is supported by a bronze bush which sits in the gearbox casing. This wears and can cause the noise that I think you are describing - mine does the same, after the engine has started for a second or two whilst the starter motor is coming to rest. My local specialist says that, "they all do that eventually".

The bush is available for a few pennies, but changing it is a bit laborious. Take out the starter motor and you'll see the bush in the gearbox casing where it supports the end of the starter spindle. Either split the bush by sawing with a junior hacksaw blade (it's soft metal so it shouldn't take long) or fill the bush with grease and drive a close fitting bar into the bore of the bush - this should force it out of its recess. Then tap in the new one.

Clean the starter pinion and its guide and re-assemble, then say goodbye to noisy starter misery.

Best wishes

RB

Hi chaps,

well the starter motor is sorted, Thanks for the tip RB but i didn't need to use the shim or cut the old one out as the new one was a little different.

I got it from a main dealer total cost inc vat £148. And it looks the same apart from the spline is a bit smaller and the housing around the bearing is more encased.

Took about 4 hours to do but i completly took all the front end off at the same time to give it a fettle, should also help to get the front mount out later in the week too :D

Thanks all.

Kip.
