nianiamh 0 Posted April 26, 2007 Hi, just got the wife a VR6 and i have a question if anyone can help. Should the water pump be making the pumping sound as soon as the ignition is on even before the engine is started or is this a fault. The car runs spot on, i was just wondering if this is some thing that needs sorting or not. Cheers
emirc 0 Posted April 26, 2007 It's normal. You should also be able to hear ABS and fuel pump working for short period of time while ignition on, but aux. water pump should be continuously working smoothly.
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted April 26, 2007 As soon as you flip the ignition on, the water pump activates, and when you turn the ignition off, the pump stays on for 10 minutes pumping water round the block to prevent localised hot spots. All perfectly normal.....

Rob Heath 0 Posted April 26, 2007 Just about to change this on my sisters VR. Any tips??
CazzaVR 0 Posted April 26, 2007 You'll need to take off the black plastic engine cover/HT guide bit on the top above the pump. Unplug the electrical plug on top ogf the pump. Undo the two hoses (remember the engine needs to be cold!!!!). Slide pump down out of rubber ring/holder. Fitting new pump is reverse of above. It's really easy! VAG-hag 0 Posted May 7, 2012 arrise thread!! CAZZA - no special tools required to do this? Im doing both water pumps & all other coolant plumbing while the car is in bits. Thanks.
CazzaVR 0 Posted May 7, 2012 Nope- it's easy! The worst bit is the VW spring clips, but some decent mole grips/large pliers will be fine for this.
