Reggit 0 Posted November 12, 2007 Asking on behalf of a mate; Does anyone know what spec atf is correct for a VR6 auto box? It's on a golf although I doubt that matters. He's too tight to use VW stuff and can't find a x-ref to other makes of oil. Ta.
Supercharged 2 Posted November 12, 2007 Tell him not to change it then - the VW stuff is critical...
fla 9 Posted November 13, 2007 I dont kow how critical it is supercharged, afaik most auto fluids are much teh same, they are either Dexron 2 or 3. The level however is critical, too low and you get wear, too much and there is excess pressure in the box. Use a good additive with the fluid though and make sure teh sump gasket is replaced. It may help to change it twice to get most of the fluid out of the torque converter.
Reggit 0 Posted November 13, 2007 What he's had to do is use an unknown auto box and converter picked up cheap from fleabay as his had cracked around the torque converter (or somewhere)and was dumping lots of oil. The 'new' box has knackered fluid in and needs replacing to see if the box is a good 'un, hence the requirement to use cheaper oil in it.
fla 9 Posted November 14, 2007 OK, get some fluid form Lloyds or your local factors. Change the filter, remove the solenoids and give them a careful wipe, check the remainng area of the box sump and reassemble. Run the car for say 100 miles and change the filter and fluid again - this will ensure your box is in as good condition as poss. Note the colour of the fluid it should be reddish-brown and not look like its got bits in it which will point to burnt clutches. Use a good tranny additive, which is basically a friction modifier, which will help the clutches and give you a smoother drive. Try that and let me know how you get on.
