georgek 0 Posted January 17, 2008 Hi all, Had the AA out this morning as the VR wouldn't start. Guy gives the starter solenoid a whack with a bar and all is fine. Problem is it needs a whack to start every time now :( Is it new starter motor time or is the solenoid able to be removed and fixed separately? Are these jobs that I can do myself? I don't mind having a go. Thanks George
davidwort 0 Posted January 17, 2008 yep, the solenoids come off, easy job, they get weak over the years and stick usually when hot (the electro magnet is weaker then). I think it may be hard to source just a solenoid though, second hand is your best bet, careful with non-VW exchange starters though, they've not got the best reputation for longevity. It's worth removing the starter and cleaning it up/check the carbon brushes too if it's old enough for the solenoid to be playing up. It doesn't help that the wiring to the solenoid deterioriates, I've seen a few people relay up the solenoid feed from the ignition so it gets a full 12V from the battery direct. Earth straps could do with checking/cleaning replacing if necessary too.
georgek 0 Posted January 18, 2008 Took the solenoid apart and gave it a good old clean, replaced and all is well again!
