poll250 0 Posted January 19, 2008 Hi, Ive tried searching but it doesn't seem to work too well anymore (just me?) Anyway, I was coming out of a newly layed carpark this morning and to cut a long story short the exit hadn' been properly finished. I ended up smacking what I think is my sump into a raised manhole cover pretty hard, it stopped the car dead! Upon inspection there was a shedload of oil leeking from the front right hand corner. Does anyone know where the best place to get a new/2nd hand sump and gasket is? Is it likely to have damaged anything else? Any help would be greatly appreciated. dirtytorque 0 Posted January 19, 2008 If it was my car I would have a very good look to see if there was any impact damage to the bottom end. You may have been luck but personally I would get it on axle stands and have a very good look. Then maybe turn the engine over by hand to see if it looks/feels ok?!? fingers x'd for u. Toad 0 Posted January 19, 2008 Think yours is a VR6, so you'll need to buy a sump gasket from VW as there are no pattern ones, and it costs £35ish. Think the sumps themselves are fairly reasonable from VW too.
M15 VW 0 Posted January 19, 2008 New sumps from the dealers are just under £60.
poll250 0 Posted January 19, 2008 Thanks for the quick replies! Yeah its a '94 VR, I'll get the sump off tomorrow and have a good look around. The car drove fine for about a mile and a half straight after so fingers crossed its ok! If it's anything too expensive I'll probably put it through insurance as the contractors shouldn't have opened a carpark in that state. Andy

Your only hope of getting them to pay is if they had no signs up and if you took pictures.
boost monkey 0 Posted January 20, 2008 Think about it for a moment. If you hit something hard enough to create a gap large enough for oil to come out, then: The pan could well be bent, which you know - replacement pan. The bolts could be bent or sheared - replacement bolts, The bolts could have stripped the thread from the block into which they go.... oh dear - new block??? I'd get under it asap, whip the pan off and examine all those holes. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst. Keep us updated buddy, hope it gets fixed soon. 12 DEG BEN 0 Posted January 20, 2008 If a sump and gasket costs so much get yourself a mk4 alloy number as you dont need the gasket and it is baffled. Also holds an extra litre of oil which helps with cooling and oil life. You need to find out which one does not have a sensor hole in the bottom though and you need new longer bolts. Stole mine off the bay for 10 quid. Never laughed so much.
poll250 0 Posted February 5, 2008 Well after a sticky couple of weeks with garages, the cars back on the road with a new sump and gasket, fitted by the lovely people at vw for only £400! Luckily I'm not the one paying for it (the construction company responsible for the carpark are!) It's not all roses though.... I thought I better take the car to get the tracking checked on the way back from the dealers, been meaning to get it done for ages actually. The guy put my car on the ramp, but then called me over and showed me the movement in my wheel: he could wobble the left wheel backwards and forwards a couple of inches! He said it was probably a ball-joint? Is this likely to be the ball-joint causing the problem? I did have alot more wear on the tyres on that side before I changed them.... Argggghhhhhh! In for a penny in for a pound...

In for a penny in for a pound... Good news on the sump although £400 does sound a little steap! Yes it does sound like a balljoint has gone, get the other one done at the same time as it is likely to be knackered. If you are really in for a pound then look at getting new wishbones, arb drop links, arb drop link bushes, rear beam bushes and top mounts front and rear done as well. It should feel like a new car when you have finished but it is not going to be cheap.

It should feel like a new car when you have finished but it is not going to be cheap. I'd also do the tie-rods too as the joints/bushes on those will probably be shagged too. I certainly wouldn't take it to VW to get that done as it'll cost you both arms and legs. I'd wager a job like that at a VW specialist would probably cost you somewhere in the region of £700. It will feel like a completely new car afterwards though...
poll250 0 Posted February 5, 2008 Yeah I've been reading alot about doing all those parts at the same time, and trust me, noting I'm paying for is ever going to be done at a dealers! I might just start by getting the ball joints done, anyone got a rough idea of cost? Something like 20 quid a side for parts plus an hours labour or so?
