Auto trans problems

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Auto 2L 8v '94

So got into the C this morning and on the way to town noticed it wasn't changing up into 4th. it was slow traffic so i thought just didn't have enough speed, so went the long country road way and still only sits in 3rd and won't change up. Also noticed it doesn't kick down either, can change using the manual shift, but if in D goes up from 1 - 3 as normal and sits there...all was fine when i left it ;ast Thursday. i did leave my lights on though and had to take the battery out to recharge over night, but put it back in yesterday and started fine, didn't drive it tough..only this morning.

any ideas? i will check the ATF levels but didn't' see any leak under the car when i looked.

need to find someone with VAGCOM close by as was gonna meet a dude in Slough today to use his cable for my ABS light as it keep going on, but didn't want a 40mile motorway trip with only 3 gears!!

last year i had the C in a garage and they had to order a knocker sensor which took ages, but the mechanic said it wasn't kicking down when he checked it before ordering the sensor..could it be the same thing? pulling away is slow..you can hear the engine rev but movement is slow to start - similar to a clutch slipping if you can imagine..could it be something like that? not got too much mechanical experience with Autos so not sure where to start...

thanks guys..

i have a VAGCOM cable which should work with Ross-tech software, but as i am a Mac man and no PC laprtop to be seen i cannot hook up my Macbook to the car as i haven't found any OS X compatible software..anyone with a spare PC laptop floating around in Epsom area???? :) :)

If its not kicking down, check teh kickdown switch below the accelerator pedal. Also, change the tranny fluid and filter and rive it around for a while. Use a good additive, which is basically a friction modifier, like lubegard. Dont use Wynn's its no good. When you change te fluid make sure you keep everything spotless. Clean the solenoid area and replace the sump gasket. See what VAGCOM throws up, it may be a faulty solenoid pack, or even a dodgy TCM. I've got a spare TCM if you need. They're like gold dust, so dont bother trying to get hold of one.

The k3-k4 clutch is notoriously bad. I'm looking to get hold of a shafted auto box, strip it right down and figure the problems and weak areas out.

Anyway, try that and report back.

ok,

latest is it doesn't move out of 3rd unless manually done. i can go through 1,2 and 3, but on D stays in 3 and doesn't change down.

hmm..probably be good to have an auto specialist take a peek.

check the solenoid sequencing through VAGCOM, i'll dig out the sequencing that you can check with the engine off but ignition on. Basically it will outline the faulty solenoids.

Also, the 096 box doesnt like standing still for too long, so if you give it a good drive taking it up to 6000rpm, it will help.

What happens if you get up to 50mph and coast downhill, does it change up to 4th? If not let it coast and then kickdown hard to second and then let it coast again.

btw, What is the mileage?

Had to go into town today and thought i'd try the C, and lo and behold it all worked fine. shifted up through 1,2,3 and 4 no prob, kicked down from 4 to 3 and then to 2..so all seems fine for now. will still connect to VAGCOM when i get a chance and see what the readings are..mileage is about 128K. how easy/difficult is it to change the ATF? not got too much parking space to work under the car..will i need to lift it onto axle stands? i got a fairly good mechanical sense but is there a write up of the procedure somewhere to make sure, not got a manual.

Its not hard to change the fluid:

1. raise the front onto stands, and place an oil collection tray underneath.

2. Remove the sump cover, its next to the oil sump cover, but open the rear bolts first.

3. Once all teh bolts are removed, remove the sump, from teh rar first so you can collect the fluid that comes out

4. Pull off the filter, it is not secured with anythnig but the central rubber 'bung'

5. wipe the lower solenoid area with a clean rag

6. Repalce sump gasket or reuse and use a rtv gasket on the mating faces

7. Fill with trsanny fluid from teh dipstick point - there is no manual filling eye

8. Make sure you use exactly the same amount of fluid as was drained off

9. Add some Lubegard

10. Start the engine and let t idle until the temp rises to around 50C. Recheck fluid level and topup as necessary

wicked..will have a play at the weekend hopefully. Can you order the bit online (gaskets etc..) or is it something halfords might have plus fluid/lubs...not got much opportunity to go shopping around. local parts place is quite small and they always seem not to have any bits for the C. :(

Dont think Halfords would have it tbh, best bet is someone like Lloyds, or a transmission specialist, or even good ol' VW. The additive you should get hold of from any good auto trans workshop.

hey dude you are the first person i have ever met with another 2litre 8 valve auto. so hallo! unfortunately mine is doin what yours was doing with the gear change problems however it has gotten much worse for mine as it refuses to go into reverse. i have changed the oil and filter i have un bolted the cable and tried changing the gears manually to no avail. i dropped the car off today to a local mech, and it was driving in gears 1,2,3 but wouldnt switch upto 4th until i put the gear selector into REVERSE!! do u think this could possibly be an electrical fault causing this?? and have you had any more probs with yours?? ps if your ever considering selling or breaking yours down and the gearbox is still intact ill buy!! cheers dude
