Golf mk3 VR6 standard immobiliser problems

Been asked to look at my mates vr mk3. When i looked, i noticed it starts for few secs then dies.

Took a ht lead off and the spark seems to cut after 2 secs.

It has a immobilser ring around the standard barrel but ive never delt with these before.

How can i test it, or bypass it? i tried the spare key for the car and still does it.

Follow the wiring from the reader coil to the transponder box,then wiggle the two connections to the transponder box,if no good give the connections a good dose of wd.
