Andy T 0 Posted December 11, 2003 My C came with an exhaust system that is really loud! Even pulling away slowly and going through the gears its sounds like you are on full throttle! I took it in to a powerflow exhaust centre who initially quoted by £70 to fit another large silencer to tone it down. When I eventually got around to booking it in, the company had moved away from powerflow, and was making their own systems & silencers from a higer grade of stainless steel, the only thing they now buy-in is the backboxes. When the car was up on the ramps, it appeared to have a combination of different exhausts welded up together! The front expansion pipe was std, middle box looked like scorpion, and the rear silencer a custom job! It was in quite poor condition corrosion wise. They suggested the only way to do the job properly was to replace the whole lot, cat back, for £300. This included various choices of back box. I didn't want to spend that much and I liked the back box it had (discreet short round tip on round box) so we compromised on replacing it from the cat back, with two silencers, up to the current rear box, although they couldn't guarantee it would be any quieter. They did a great job and it is a work of art, but it is still just as loud! Slightly more refined I think, although the neighbours say it sounds deeper! So the option I have is to now have the rear box replaced. They have a silencer which is similar to the current one, and it has a removable stainless tube insert which is supposed to reduce the noise by reducing the tailpipe diameter. Im guessing it reduces from about 4" to 2-2.5", its held in place with a small bolt so it can be removed/replaced to suit your mood. Has anyone got one of these adjustable back boxes? It looks well made, not at all max power-ish, but i'm wondering by how much it will reduce the noise. I guess if the diameter of the insert outlet is smaller than the system tubing (2.5"?) it's going to affect the performance? Cheers for any help, sorry about the essay! big_mac 0 Posted December 12, 2003 ive got a free-flow custom exhaust and have the same problem, i was told by the guy who built the exhaust that the "tuneable" backboxes only have an adjustent on the tone eg deeper etc. dont know if thats the same thing but it may not solve the problem. *** Mod Edit - Please don't SHOUT your posts, it makes them hard to read! - Henny ***
Andy T 0 Posted December 15, 2003 Yeah someone else has pointed out the same thing, it might not actually reduce the noise! Hmmm, don't know whether to have another chat with them then give it a go, or buy a miltek back box(or similar) and have it modded to fit the custom system.... All ££££'s which ever way I go! Andy T 0 Posted December 19, 2003 Called them this afternoon, got them to admit that they can't do a quiet system! It's all boomy impretza style silencers, bollocks to that. Said I might look for another backbox (miltek/supersprint ?) and get them to mod it to fit the custom system. So, recommendations for a stainless backbox for a G60, with a nice tone on acceleration, but not too loud? Cheers,
