gogsboy 0 Posted February 19, 2009 Does anyone know what the difference is with calipers made by ATE and stamped with 54 as opposed to ones made by Lucas and stamped 54? Will they be the same or does the maker tell you that they are for different set ups? Also how do you know a 288 carrier from a 312, is it really obvious guessing it is
rolex 0 Posted May 9, 2010 Can anyone answer this? whats the difference between 280 and 288 set up? disc size, carrier size/shape? pad size? caliper size?
mimjed 0 Posted May 9, 2010 the discs are 288 mm hence the name. the calipers arent actually that different its the shape of the pads that makes the diffence. larger surface area. carriers are different to 280 setup. worth doing a swap. i still run 4 stud 280mm discs on mine though, couldnt be arsed with redrilling or swapping to 5 stud. rolex 0 Posted May 9, 2010 so could you use 288disc 288pads 288 carrier and 280 caliper or would you need 288 caliper?
mimjed 0 Posted May 9, 2010 you need the 288 caliper to accept the bigger disc.
4eyes2wheels 0 Posted May 9, 2010 I got suitable calipers on eBay for £35 . . .
swiftkid 1 Posted May 9, 2010 how can you tell the difference between a set of 288mm calipers and 280s? I have a set i got off a mk3 but i don't know what size they are for as i don't have the discs or pads.
mimjed 0 Posted May 9, 2010 they are different manufacturers for both. ate make the 288, late mk3 vr6 95-98 i think and girling g60 are the 280 part numbers will reveal all too.
swiftkid 1 Posted May 10, 2010 well the problem i had was that the caliper was pretty rusted up, i wire brushed it to reveal lucas and 54 so guess that makes it a 280mm setup :( ahh nevermind!
rolex 0 Posted May 10, 2010 so, ATE's are ONLY 288?
mimjed 0 Posted May 10, 2010 yes lucas 54's are 280's aswell. think the girling ones had two pistons. so, ATE's are ONLY 288? from the mk3 golf yes i believe so. but then vw went back to lucas for the early mk4 i think
