You are not alone with this. I bought a basket case 2.0 16V with similar problems-

1. Main beam always on.

2. Wipers start when you 'flash' main beam.

3. Squirt water on the windscreen and main beam comes on at the same time.

4. Wipers would come on whilst driving along and not stop unless ignition switched off.

5. Washer jets would squirt water whilst driving along and then stop without touching anything.

And on top of that lot ABS works 'pumping' the brakes without touching the pedal. I was starting to think the car was posessed. Electrics are shagged. Fixed the main beam with a new headlight switch though. So interested how you get on.

Yep I would definitely change the X contact relay. It located at position 4 on the relay/fuse box panel and should have a number 18 on it, VW Part no. 7MO 951 253A, no more than £15 inc VAT.

As for what it is, it's a general purpose relay for all those items you listed (except headlights) that pull large amounts of current when operated, the rear window demister should be dodgy too as that takes current from the X contact relay.

Hey all

My electrics are starting to go a bit funny too. The abs light wont switch off and the windows will only go down if the doors are open could this be due to the same problem or something else??? Hope you have solved your problems mate???? good luck if not?

cheers people!!

i removed the number "18" relay and cleaned the connectors up and its all working now but there are 2 things that concern me:

1. there was melted plastic on the box were the relay goes,

2. heater fan only works on number 4.

any advice???

cheers

Heater fan only working on 4 is the thermal resistor on the blower motor.

There's a guide in the knowledge base showing how to replace it.

Cheers.

You lucky chap. Replacing number 18 did nothing for my problems.

Just to correct myself, the job of the x contact relay is to switch off the high load consumers I mentioned above (rear window demister etc) when the starter is cranked to ensure that the starter gets good amps.
