johnypud 0 Posted April 9, 2009 am i correct in saying that the thermostat sits to the right hand side of the head ? also anybody know if the housing is the same on other cars such as golf 1.8 16 v etc as mine is cracked and also no thermostat inside it currently having an overheating problem running up to 110 degrees thanks in advance
VEEDUBBED 0 Posted April 9, 2009 Thermostat is located in a awkward position, under the water pump inside a plastic housing. If you know that the thermostat is missing you obviously know were it's located? or am i not reading your post correctly?.
Wullie 1 Posted April 9, 2009 The plastic housing on the side of the head is just a connector that goes to the heater. Mine cracked a few years ago. As veedubbed says, the thermostat is hidden below the water pump, trace the hoses back from the bottom of the radiator and you should find it.
aide 0 Posted April 9, 2009 johny, cant really tell from ur post but you're probably looking at one of the temp senders, but if that's bust then you'd be getting no temp reading at all :D you can test the current acrross them to check if their working, forget the resistance tho, can find if you need if you think the thermostat beneath the pumps is stuck then confirm by checking the bottom radiatior pipe as you warm the engine up
davidwort 0 Posted April 10, 2009 as aide says you need to check if water is flowing around the radiator to check if the stat is stuck shut or not, if the radiator and bottom hose get warmish fairly quickly then you need to make sure the fan is coming on at the two speeds correctly, should be speed one at around 95 degrees and speed two if it get up to about 103, IIRC. old radiators can sometimes get partially blocked with crud and can benefit from a flush out, but it's usually the fan switch or stat that is the culprit.
