MattWilde 10 Posted May 29, 2009 Hi guys, should be picking my car up on saturday (yay!) and as it's a brand new engine should I use a different oil to the normal synta silver I have been using on the old engine? Cheers for any help :D
davidwort 0 Posted May 29, 2009 no, but i'd change (with filter) it after a 100 miles or so and then again at a thousand before reverting to the normal 5-7000 intervals,
MattWilde 10 Posted May 29, 2009 Cheers David, best get to VW to get a stock of oil and filters!!
Critical_Mass 10 Posted May 29, 2009 I thought its best to use mineral oil for the first 100-500 miles. Then switch to synthetic or semi synthetic after that.
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted May 29, 2009 Nah, use synta silver to run it in and just drive it normally, don't baby it, but don't heavily load it either until you've done about 2000 miles.
MattWilde 10 Posted May 29, 2009 I was going to use the method that A.G. Bell recommends in his tuning books. So I'll be running the car at the lowest speed in 5th, floor it for a few seconds to put pressure on the rings and snap the throttle shut to draw the oil up the cylinders, repeated 12-15 times. Then run as normal for 200 miles, trying to keep the engine speed alternating, no continuous running for 200 miles. Change the oil then run as pianowire has mentioned for 2000 miles with an oil and filter change halfway through. Going to be tough to keep the right foot calm
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted May 29, 2009 Yep, lots of over run to oil the bores and some pressure on the rings to bed them in works. That actually happens quite quickly, within 20 miles or so. Do lots of over-running in lower gears too, 3rd and 2nd.
