Creaking when turning...

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

i've had this problem a long time now. Basically when turning at low speeds, there's a horrible 'rubber creaking noise' coming from what feels to be directly in front of the steering wheel...

When I had my coilovers fitted by G-Werks, I told them of this problem. I had the new suspension put on AND new top mounts. A month or 2 on and the problem is even worse! I've changed the PAS fluid. Took it to a local VW specialist and when he turned the wheel in sharp movements when stationary, with my head in the front arches, you can hear the noise distinctly, from both sides too! Yet with the bonnet open you can't hear it (probably due to the engine running?!). He reckons it will be the top mounts...

I've searched the forum many times on this matter, and a few times it seems the solution has been to grease the top mounts - but wouldn't G-Werks have done this for me if they fitted new ones?? :confused4:

Is there a way I can try lubricating them without taking the suspension out? If anything, to see if it eases the problem then can go about getting the suspension out and doing it properly? And what could I use, a silicone spray? Can i undo the cover things (bearing in mind im not that mechanically gifted so terminology will be a little shoddy lol) in the engine bay off, and lubricate from there? From my knowledge, will the top mount and bearing be just underneath?? If i take these cover things off, I wont affect the geommetry will I?? :confused4:

And also, what is a top mount, the big rubber bush??

Many thanks!!!

If you mean the caps inside the engine bay then yes you can take them off whilst the car is on the ground. However dont remove them, then jack the car up as the suspension will drop and you'll have to get the geometry set back up.

Ok thanks, so taking them off with car grounded should be ok geometry wise?

Do you reckon I can get in enough with some lube to see if this could be the problem? :confused4:

What maybe a good test is, opening the bonnet and turn the wheel from lock to lock to see if it is the rubber top mounts creaking, it probably will be them, but worth checking. Doesnt silicone spray dry after a while, if so i'd use something like WD40.

So take the caps off then turn the wheel? With the engine running and my ear next to the caps when turning, you can't hear it...although you can from inside the arches and inside the car

No not yet...I've only had the car since April...

The wishbone bushes, are they at the bottom end of suspension strut?

The noise is coming from the top end...?

You haven't said what model of Corrado it is, but I've never heard VR6 top mounts creak before, or ANY properly fitted mounts come to that.

Wishbone bushes are at the bottom but don't outrule noises travelling up through the strut though. You sound 100% sure it's the top mounts, so i'd replace them.

Sorry didn't think - its a '94 VR6

Oh ok, i'll have a deeper listen and see if its not coming from the bottom too...Im not 100% sure at all!! Just goin on what others have told me... :(

I shouldn't have to replace them If they'd been replaced 2months ago, would i?!

I hear what you're saying - the metal top cap is rubbing in the rubber donut and creaking? That shouldn't happen if the TMs were fitted properly. The bearing cartridge I've never know to creak either.

Coilover springs can sometimes creak and groan, but again it's pretty rare!

I think that's whats happening. Im gonna take the caps off this evening and spray some lube in, what do u reckon? WD40 to see if it eases the problem?

Thing is the noise was there before I had coilovers put on.

Ok put some WD40 in the top mounts (as far as I could get to, anyway) let it soak in for 10mins, then tried again but to no avail.

Got under the car Kev to have a look at the wishbones, the N/S bush is moving loads, and now Ive seen it the sound could possibly be coming from there! I think I'll buy some new bushes for both sides, get some new wishbones and ball joints at the same time while Im there. Any recommendations of places to get parts? Obviously the stealers but do anywhere else make good solid parts? Is it one bush per side?

Again, many thanks!

Yeh I got them on my favourites, just not sure of the quality for suspension parts. Maybe I'll have to save up and go to the stealers...

Fair enough. I was planning on getting all the parts apart from the springs and shocks for my suspension change from them, every thing I've brought off them so far has been febi

Could possibly be aftermarket rear TCA bushes. Mine has a creaking/groaning noise which is due to a fecked non-genuine TCA bush that seems to have lasted about 10000 miles. Another reason to buy genuine (!!)

If it helps, I have a brand pair coming out of some brand new genuine Track Control Arms?

You mean rear as in rear of the car or rear bush? :confused4:

it's ok, think Im gonna buy new control arms w/bushes straight from VW. The underside of my car is fairly rotten from being stood around so long (its only done 53k, in the last 6yrs its covered about 10k if that lol!) So im gonna buy new ball joints, control arms /bushes, and new ARB links methinks

No, he means the rear wishbone bush... was that what was causing that strange noise Neil on the left??

As mentioned above, make sure you get genuine VAG wishbones, thicker metal and bushes last much longer than the pattern ones.

The guys at DG have been reporting really positive results from fitting the Golf R32 rear wishbone bushes so might be worth speaking to them / looking into that as an option if you do replace the wishbones?

Ok brilliant thanks!

Literally just got off the phone from my local stealer -

Lower control arm + bushes - £98.43 + VAT each

Balljoints - £23.73 + VAT each

ARB Links - £34.09 + VAT each

Seems a bit high for the wishbones...does that sound correct??!

No wonder people go 3rd party, control arm including bushes is about £18-£25 from AVS and that includes VAT.

16v ones are the same as a MK2 Golf, we're talking VR6 here which is MK3 setup.

Besides which, non genuine ones will last you about 10000 miles if you're lucky. Most C's are still running on the same arms and bushes as 15 years ago.
