Kev_VR6 0 Posted August 4, 2009 Hi can anyone help with this? Just bought a VR6 and have experienced overheating. The needle was showing 110 degrees but the warning light began flashing. The oil temp was showing 126 degrees! This was only for a 3-4 mins as I was very nearly home at this point. I realised the fans hadn't come on (they had been doing so far but sounded rough). After investigating I realised the fans were jammed and would only turn with considerable force by hand at which point pieces of alluminium swarf began dropping out from the secondary fan's centre. The fans then began to work and were considerably easier to turn by hand so I presume the bearing has had it? Are these fans still available or has anyone fitted a Kenlo secondary fan? Also could anyone tell me whether I'm likely to have damaged anything driving at this temp? Thanks for your help
fla 9 Posted August 4, 2009 Hopefully no serious damage to the car, 126 is hot but the oil should be able to manage it without shearing. Best bet is to change the oil & filter for your own peace of mind. There is a completeprocedure on checking the fans, have a little search on the 'engine bay' section. I've replaced my fans with two 11" spals which blast out a lot of air and are pretty quiet too. I've also got the old fan plus the auxilliary if you want to put that back in your fan shroud. Its only done 50k miles too. Test test the fans, check the wiring and perhaps change the fan switch in the rad. Might also be worth flushing out the cooling system and refilling. Its not difficult, just time consuming. let us know how you get on. Best of luck.
Kev_VR6 0 Posted August 4, 2009 Thanks for the advice fla! Got it booked in for a full service on Thursday with Volksmaster in oldham so I'll wait and see what the damage is. I'll just not use it 'till then. Shame. I'll let you know what the score is with it. Cheers mate
