timing problem

Hey, recently my 'rado (1990 16v) has started making a rattling sound when its just tickin over, which stops when im actually driving. somebody said it was a problem with the timing. anyone encountered a similar issues? what would be my best course of action?

doubt its timing..bad timing would cause more issues when driving
