horrific squealing and loss of power steering

about a week ago the power steering (i assume) started squealing a bit on full lock (similar sound to a fan belt on its way out). this has now degraded rapidly to the point which it squeals whenever you try and steer either direction at very low speeds or standstill, and the steering goes VERY heavy and jerky.

 

this happen to anyone else? diagnosis/easy to fix?

 

also, would you continue to drive the car in this condition (is it likely to cause more damage)?

Just put a new belt on :)

Also check to see if you are missing the belt cover as this helps keep water away from it

check your powersteering level and condition of oil, check belt condition and adjustment, :)

same as check the fluid sounds like you may have a leak

Also check that the pump's not seizing, due to failing bearings especially if there's a bit of leakage around the pulley.

it happened twice to me

 

the 1st: broken PAS pipe, leak, no fluid

 

the 2nd: PAS belt not in tension.

fluid looks good so i guess its the belt. easy job?

I don't know, I have never done it myself. but I have seen it being done and does not look too difficult, but I can't really tell you how to do it, sorry :(
