vagingit.co.uk 0 Posted January 25, 2010 the G has been squeeling of late, an annoying squeak as the engine rotates, Ive narrowed it down to the alternator belts, or at least around there somewhere. Ive had a new alternator belt and cambelt fitted a couple of months ago, so the belts are ok, but I think the alternator itself is the source of the noise. Can the bearings make a noise with age, and can they be replaced, or is easier to replace the whole alternator?
Richardshoes 0 Posted January 25, 2010 Hi, You can buy a refurb kit from VW. Those long thin bolts are a bit nasty to get off.
davidwort 0 Posted January 25, 2010 take the alternator belt off and spin it by hand, shouldn't make a roaring noise, if it does they are badly worn, with the voltage regulator removed from the back of the alt it should be totally silent spinning, any good motor refurb place should be able to source and fit new bearings but an exchange unit is the easiest thing to do usually.
