lil b 0 Posted February 20, 2010 went to our local scrap yard this moring (as u do) to see if i could find any bits for my c , all my breather pipes (bar main intake ) were split and very perished and my local stealer had quoted me £45 for them :mad2: ... as i was giving up i saw a mk3 golf gti which had only just been dropped off there as nothing had been taken off yet but i thought it would prob be a later engine or a 16v ...... but noo it was right and got all i wanted for a mear £2 all pipes and clips look pretty brand new !!!!! :) so i suggest always go down your local scrappie before going to stealers you never know what you might find
MikLSP 0 Posted February 20, 2010 Nice stroke of luck there, glad you got what you needed :) I like a good scrap yard but the one near where I used to live in Preston became a joke when they prevented anyone from going into the yard themselves to look for parts and added a £5 fee for the privilege of having them do it. One of the best things about scrap yards is scouring a vehicle for anything and everything which might be useful to you, that's not possible at places like that :(
Jonny777 0 Posted February 20, 2010 My local scrappy is rubbish and has a minimum charge of a fiver for anything. :mad2:
SIMONG 0 Posted February 21, 2010 i work at the scrap yard in preston, it may be a joke that public aren't allowed in yes, but you got to see it from our side. i would of gladly let you in the yard, you may have to of been escorted by a member of staff but as long as the person wonting to go in wasnt a complete knob i would of sorted. also there masses of laws, rules, regulations which we have to adhear to by the EA, insurance policys, waste management licences etc. if you went climing up on some cars and it fell on you, you wont be doing it again! its not as clear cut as just saying, you not coming in. £5 minium charge is to stop people wasting our time wontin a nut or bolt, belive me i get asked for some rediculas stuff which if you got it new would be 20-30p for a motor factors. again as long as the customer wasnt being a knob it wasnt always a fiver. i like going getting my hands dirty as much as the next guy but there are people which prefer to come down, get the part and go without getting any tools out. The one near me in Bloxham is rubbish, people just rip stuff off for the hell of it and brake it. So going to the dealers is sometime easyer and you know that your getting new and correct parts. Si. Yeah, I understand the whole health & safety thing even if I don't necessarily agree with it. I guess the couple of times I came back since that rule was introduced I must have got the wrong guy as the whole experience wasn't very helpful. I did however go there again with 4 Satin SIlver Mk4 Golf doors and a much more helpful guy sorted me out with some cash for 'em :) Is that the one off Kent Street? I used to like that place for rummaging around in. Shame if H&S has stopped the fun. Yeah, that's the place I mean, it was a good place to rummage and in fact I once saw a red Corrado going in there and thought it was a terrible shame to see it going to scrap. SIMONG 0 Posted February 21, 2010 yeah that was me, you swapped your doors because you wonted doors with colour coded bump strips and handles. the red rado was a 1.8 16v with a blown head gasket, it was a bit of a nail tbh
MikLSP 0 Posted February 22, 2010 haha, well thanks for that mate good to know there is someone decent at the yard then :) I did indeed swap my doors for GTi doors and simply wanted to get rid of the old ones before moving house, lol! That red Corrado didn't look great I must admit, the paint was abysmal but still it's a shame to lose another. Mik
