[Warning] Check your Brake Flexi's!!!

Speaking to a mate who does MOT's today - he said they have had an unusual amount of cars in the last few weeks failing on bulged / ruptured brake flexi hoses.

 

All makes and models but particularly French cars around 5 - 10 years old he said - one actually burst as it was being driven onto the ramp so very lucky for the owner!

 

He thinks it's mainly stone damage which isn't surprising with the current state of our roads and the harsh winter we have just had.

 

Now the weather is good I would advise everyone to check theirs, just clean any dirt off and run your hand round the hose to check it's not bulged, well worth spraying some WD40 etc on either end too to stop rust build up.

 

VW recommend changing hoses at 7 years old, this seems to be the point at which the ends start to corrode as well making them more difficult to undo.

It will be the far harsher winter rather than stone damage.

 

The flexis are always made of a rubber composite and as they wear some moisture gets trapped into the flexi, given the sustained cold spell this year it is likely that the water in the flexis froze causing the damage.

Stainless braided hoses with a clear plastic covering would sort this out. Bulging rubber flexi hoses are one of the moses common failure or advisory reasons here in Ireland.
