Jim 2 Posted May 11, 2010 Having now got the VR6, it's become quite clear that the steering on my 16v really isn't right. It's exceptionally heavy, almost to the point of feeling somewhere between a VR6 and a MK2 Scirocco WITHOUT power steering. Just wondering what some of the most common causes of this could be? I was doing some digging through the search and read that the PAS pump impeller can wear over time meaning it simply can't pump the fluid round enough to be effective. Any idea what a 16v PAS pump costs?! Dare I even ask? :) Any other thoughts? Blocked pipes, etc? No idea if the PAS fluid has ever been changed - I guess that could help a bit? davidwort 0 Posted May 11, 2010 a while back now, but my pump was 120 notes exchange from GSF. but it could be that there's a problem with the valves in the rack (sorry that's even worse news) fluid level is still where it should be is it? A change of fluid might be a good first step, perhaps even two. If you do drain the fluid off, it would be an idea to remove the pressure relief valve from the pump and see if there's any obvious crap in there (tiny gauze filter) It's easy enough to do. Jim 2 Posted May 11, 2010 Thanks for that David. Quite resigned to the fact that I'm schitt with a spanner so think I might get it booked into DG for a bit of a fault finding / clean-up session on the power steering! Just wanted to get some ideas on what could be possible cause. Regarding the rack, wouldn't scare me TOO much - I'm sure there are loads of good specialists who can refurb steering racks in the Midlands so would just choose that rather than a new rack from VAG! :)
Supercharged 2 Posted May 12, 2010 Jim, I have Eurocarparts racks on both of mine, been on there for years and have been fine... You need to sort the column play out first though I'd say mate, you might find that also improves the weight. also what front tyre pressure are you running? davidwort 0 Posted May 12, 2010 ... also what front tyre pressure are you running? yeah, you want 2 bar, not 2 psi

Trust me - when you feel the weight of the steering next time we meet up, the play in the column isn't going to make any difference! I will get that sorted, probably at the same time - but this is clearly something wrong with the power steering system! Compared to the VR it weighs a f*cking tonne! Tyre pressure - I'm running... er... 32PSI up front on the 16" alloys :)
