n3p 3 Posted May 30, 2010 Hi guys, Was just wondering if anyone had a caliper bolt fall off whilst driving and what could cause it? I changed my hub and bearing recently so I know myself I did them tight...okay, so i didn't use the specified torque settings because they weren't at hand, but i did them proper tight. Brakes made a horrible grinding noise and luckily as I pulled into my driveway they just locked up completely. Took the wheel off to find the bottom bolt missing (no signs of shearing) and the top one finger loose! I tried the top bolt on the bottom hole and the thread doesn't seem to be stripped. The only thing I could see was that the bolt was a bit greasy from a previously split CV boot. If it makes any difference, I have vr6 calipers/carriers on my 16v. Anyone have the torque settings for the bolts, and can I use some kind of sealing product before tightening (any recommendations?). Cheers edit** forgot to say - front N/S caliper
CazzaVR 0 Posted May 31, 2010 New ones should come with some threadlock on AFAIK. You can get them from Halfords as a 'Brake Fitting Kit' for a couple of quid. Had this happen to me a couple of times- made a clonking noise :mad2:
Supercharged 2 Posted June 1, 2010 Yep as above - should always be replaced according to VW and I think the torque is 35Nm Pennies from VW but the Halfords kits are 80p on trade for 4 bolts.
KIPVW 0 Posted June 1, 2010 Is this the 13mm hex head bolt for holding the caliper to the carrier? Will check all ours when i get the chance but I always fit new ones which vw supply with either pads or the rubber slide pin seals/rubbers.
