VRTrickster 0 Posted July 22, 2010 After my cv bolts have undone themselves on the nsf a few times after my front end overhaul. I replaced the after market ones with some genuine vw items. These lasted a lot longer before loosening also. I still have a clonk on that side when dropping of kerbs etc. Everything has been replaced, suspension and steering wise. I seem to have in and out play on that drive flange. That's got me thinking that this could be my noise, and also causing the bolts to loosen? How much play should there be in the cv drive flanges? Cheers.
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted July 23, 2010 Shouldn't matter if the flange has a bit of end float as the bolts attach to it, so the whole lot just moves in / out together. IIRC, the flanges on the 02A just tap on the shaft over a circlip, so yeah there is a little movement there. Shouldn't be excessive though. The bolts shouldn't come undone anyway, it's never happened on mine and I've had my engine in and out more times than I care to remember!! Did you torque them up to the specified setting and you are using the 3 straps under them aren't you? It's a weird one!
VRTrickster 0 Posted July 23, 2010 I haven't had chance to properly torque them up. I've just done them up with a spline bit and a 10mm spanner from under the bonnet as hard as I can. What is classed as excessive? I'll have a look later and try to get a rough measurement of it. The gearbox has probably done 156k now, so is a bit tired maybe? Toad 0 Posted July 24, 2010 Do both CVs move properly? The gearbox end one shout allow some in and out movement. I'm just wondering if this is sticky, then it could be encouraging the bolts to come loose.
